UK motorists are being warned about a costly mistake that could result in a fine of up to £1,000 and three penalty points—all due to incorrectly positioning a phone mount or other common in-car accessory. According to Birmingham Live, drivers whose view of the road is obstructed—even slightly—risk being penalised under Highway Code rule 30, which requires windscreens to remain clear of any obstruction.
What the Law Says About Obstructed Views
The rule is straightforward: no object should block a driver’s view of the road. This includes not just phone mounts, but also dash cams, air fresheners, and sat-navs. If a police officer believes your view is impaired, you could be fined on the spot, or face more serious penalties depending on the severity.
Former traffic officer Pete Nelson highlighted the scale of the issue:
“Phone mounts are incredibly common – we see them in nearly every car. But when they’re stuck in the wrong place, especially in the driver’s line of sight, they can become a hazard.”
Best Practice for Mount Placement
To avoid penalties, drivers are advised to place mounts in the lower corners of the windscreen, ideally the bottom right or left, where they won’t obstruct the road view. If using dashboard mounts, ensure they don’t block instrument panels, air vents, or airbags.
A spokesperson from Number 1 Plates advised:
“Phone mounts are useful, but only when used correctly. Placing them in the wrong spot could block your vision and lead to a fine or even an accident.”
Even small accessories can create legal issues, so drivers are encouraged to review their vehicle setup and ensure full visibility at all times.
