Efforts to reduce road traffic injuries in Bury have received a boost with the introduction of new 20mph zones and pedestrian safety measures. The schemes form part of a wider drive to support Transport for Greater Manchester’s (TfGM)Vision Zero’ ambition of eliminating all road deaths and serious injuries.

A total of £543,000 has been allocated to Bury Council to implement targeted road safety improvements. The funding comes through the Greater Manchester-wide sustainable transport settlement, which prioritises interventions at locations identified as injury collision hotspots or high-risk zones for vulnerable road users.

New Speed Limits Aim to Protect Children and Local Communities

Three new 20mph areas will be implemented across Bury, focusing on areas near schools and residential streets. According to Bury Council, the Church Street area will see a full 20mph zone introduced, complete with traffic calming features designed to reduce speeds and enhance pedestrian visibility.

In Prestwich, Charlton Avenue will be designated a 20mph school zone to ensure safer access for pupils, while a similar scheme will be introduced in the Clough Street area of Radcliffe

These zones are expected to deliver improvements in safety outcomes by reducing the likelihood and severity of collisions, particularly those involving children and non-motorised road users.

Councillor Alan Quinn, cabinet member for the environment, climate change and operations, said the measures are intended to “carry out relatively modest road safety schemes which can provide high value for money, at known hotspots.”

The initiative is aligned with TfGM’s road danger reduction strategy, which seeks to make travel safer for all users through evidence-led interventions.

Upgraded Crossings and Traffic Features to Improve Pedestrian Safety

In addition to reduced speed limits, several infrastructure upgrades have been confirmed. A new mini-roundabout will be constructed at the junction of B6196 Bury Old Road and Arthur Lane in Ainsworth, improving traffic flow and lowering collision risks at the intersection.

Meanwhile, a zebra crossing is planned for Sunnybank Road in Unsworth, close to Bloomfield Drive, to provide safer pedestrian access in a residential zone.

Further schemes include the upgrade of a pelican crossing on A56 Walmersley Road in Chesham to a modern puffin crossing, and the installation of a new puffin crossing on A56 Bury New Road near Park View Road in Prestwich. Four outdated interactive safety signs will be replaced at various locations, and new school patrol warning lights will be installed on Radcliffe Road.

The council also confirmed funds will be used for remedial traffic calming, including lining and signage updates across the borough. These targeted enhancements form a multi-layered response to documented safety concerns, ensuring compliance with the Vision Zero policy and reducing risks for all road users.
