British Gas will offer half-price electricity for a limited two-hour window on Thursday, May 15, through its Green Flex scheme, a targeted effort to promote cleaner energy consumption. The temporary offer, part of the company’s broader shift toward sustainability, applies exclusively to customers enrolled in the PeakSave program.
According to information first reported by Birmingham Live and confirmed by British Gas, the time-limited discount aims to align household energy use with periods of high renewable generation. Around one million customers are expected to benefit, creating both financial savings and easing demand on the national grid during key surplus energy periods.
Two-hour discount linked to renewable surplus
The discount will apply between 1:30pm and 3:30pm. According to British Gas, this temporary offer is triggered by an abundance of renewable electricity resulting from windy and sunny weather conditions. The initiative encourages customers to shift their energy consumption to this two-hour period.
As stated on the British Gas website, these are “short, one or two-hour events where you can get your electricity for half price. You can be on any tariff to take part.” Customers are advised to make the most of this window for tasks that typically consume more energy, such as mowing the lawn or washing clothes.
Eligibility, participation and refund terms
The scheme is available to all PeakSave customers, regardless of their tariff. British Gas sends an email invitation to eligible participants prior to each event. No permanent enrollment is required beyond having a PeakSave account.
Electricity used during the two-hour window will be charged at the standard rate, but customers will be reimbursed afterward. As British Gas explains, “After each event, we’ll credit half of what you spent back to your account and the payment will show up as ‘PeakSave Green Flex Credit’ on your next bill or online statement. It’ll normally appear within two weeks of each event ending.”
A growing part of the PeakSave program
This weekday discount complements the existing PeakSave Sunday initiative. Every Sunday between 11:00am and 4:00pm, British Gas customers automatically benefit from half-price electricity without needing to opt in. These recurring and ad hoc offers aim to encourage more efficient energy use during periods of renewable abundance.
Since the launch of the program, British Gas has reimbursed over £20 million to more than 900,000 customers, reinforcing the financial value of adjusting energy consumption patterns.
Supporting energy transition and infrastructure
The Green Flex scheme is more than a short-term incentive. It is part of a broader British Gas strategy to prepare households for the UK’s net-zero 2050 targets. The company states that it uses its own forecasting tools “to test the potential savings and impact on the grid with this scheme.” These events serve as a testbed for smart energy usage, helping to reduce pressure on the grid at peak times.
By syncing consumption with periods of surplus, British Gas asserts that participants are “saving money and helping the planet.” This dual benefit of household savings and environmental contribution reflects a long-term move toward more responsive energy systems.
