In a bid to promote greener energy usage, British Gas is offering a 50% discount on electricity for customers today between 1pm and 3pm. The discount comes as part of the company’s PeakSave Green Flex initiative, which encourages customers to shift their electricity use to times of the day when renewable energy production is at its highest.

This initiative is designed to reduce electricity bills and help balance the grid, while also contributing to Britain’s overall push towards a more sustainable energy system. Customers who take advantage of the discount can run their washing machines, dishwashers, or even fans at a fraction of the usual cost.

How PeakSave Green Flex Works

The PeakSave Green Flex scheme is part of British Gas’ ongoing effort to make energy use more sustainable and affordable.

Customers who opt into the program receive notifications about specific “green” periods, such as today’s 1-3pm time slot, when the renewable energy supply is abundant due to favourable weather conditions. According to British Gas, the company uses its own forecasting tools to determine these periods.

This scheme helps customers reduce their electricity bills by allowing them to run household appliances during these periods when there is an excess of renewable energy.

British Gas claims this is not only beneficial for the customers but also for the national grid, as it helps balance demand and supply during peak periods. Participation in the PeakSave Green Flex events is automatic for customers who have signed up to the program.

The 50% discount is just one element of a broader initiative that includes regular half-price electricity on Sundays between 11am and 4pm, a benefit extended to all British Gas customers enrolled in the scheme. Over one million customers have participated in the program, collectively saving more than £24 million.

The Growing Role of Renewable Energy in Energy Saving Initiatives

The importance of renewable energy in energy saving schemes like PeakSave cannot be overstated.

With weather conditions playing a significant role in the availability of renewable power, such schemes are a step towards reducing reliance on fossil fuels. According to British Gas, the company’s aim is to make the most of renewable sources to reduce overall electricity consumption costs for customers.

The PeakSave scheme is an example of how energy suppliers are leveraging green energy production to incentivise customers.

The PeakSave Green Flex events also highlight a growing trend where utilities are offering more flexible pricing models to customers, encouraging them to adjust their energy usage based on real-time availability. With such programs, customers can make significant savings while contributing to the greener future that energy suppliers are striving to create.
