Thousands of older people in the UK may be missing out on higher monthly payments from the Department for Work and Pensions, as those on the lower rate of Attendance Allowance could be eligible for an increase.
According to DWP guidelines, changes in a person’s health condition or daily care needs can lead to a reassessment, potentially raising the benefit to the higher rate and boosting monthly income significantly.
The support is not means-tested, so it is not affected by income or savings, and can be claimed alongside other benefits without reduction. For many recipients, it represents a lifeline enabling them to remain independent in their own homes for longer.
This benefit is paid at two different rates depending on the level of care required. If a person needs help during either the day or night, they receive the lower rate of £73.90 per week, amounting to £295.60 per month. If help is required both during the day and night—or if the claimant is terminally ill—they may qualify for the higher rate of £110.40 per week, or £441.60 per month.
More Pensioners Urged to Report Changes in Care Needs
The DWP encourages recipients of Attendance Allowance to inform them of any changes in their condition, especially if their care needs have increased. According to the department’s guidance, a worsening health condition or the development of new medical issues may qualify an individual for the higher payment rate.
This means that someone currently receiving the lower rate could see an increase of £36.50 per week, amounting to £146 per month, if they are reassessed and awarded the higher rate. The DWP specifies that while payments may rise or fall depending on circumstances, failing to report a change could result in underpayment.
Crucially, the allowance is not subject to the Benefit Cap, ensuring recipients do not lose money from other entitlements. It also does not require proof of a formal diagnosis, but rather evidence of how the condition affects daily life. The funds can be used at the claimant’s discretion, providing greater flexibility in managing care and independence.
Benefit Designed to Support Independent Living
The aim of Attendance Allowance is to support older individuals who wish to remain in their own homes rather than move into residential care. It helps cover additional costs incurred due to care needs, such as assistance with washing, dressing, or supervision to stay safe.
Claimants do not need to have a carer or undergo a medical examination to qualify, but they must meet eligibility criteria and be of State Pension age or older. Applications are made via a detailed form assessing the impact of physical or mental health conditions on daily life.
Those who believe they may be eligible for a higher rate are advised to contact the DWP without delay. Changes to benefit rates are not applied retroactively, so prompt action is necessary to avoid missing out on entitlements.
