A packaging mix-up involving a popular ready-to-cook meat product has triggered a food safety alert across the UK retail sector.
Shoppers are being urged to return Asda’s Simple To Cook Asian Inspired Pork Belly Slices after it was revealed that some packs may contain ingredients not listed on the label, including milk and sulphites—known allergens that can cause serious reactions.
According to a report by the Manchester Evening News, the issue arose when some items were mistakenly filled with pork meatballs instead of pork belly. Asda has responded by recalling affected batches and offering full refunds to consumers.
Recall Due to Undeclared Milk and Sulphites
According to the notice, some packs of Asda Simple To Cook Asian Inspired Pork Belly Slices were mistakenly filled with Asda Simple To Cook Tomato and Mozzarella Pork Meatballs, a product which contains milk and sulphites. These allergens are not declared on the pork belly label.
A spokesperson for the Food Standards Agency stated:
“Asda is recalling Asda Simple To Cook Asian Inspired Pork Belly Slices because the product may contain milk and sulphites which are not mentioned on the label.“
“This means the product is a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites.“
The affected item is marked with a use-by date of April 25 and carries the barcode 5063089827178. No other date codes or batches are involved.
Official Guidance for Affected Customers
The Food Standards Agency has issued a warning to customers about a recalled product that may pose a risk to those with certain allergies or intolerances.
In its notice, the agency stated:
“If you have bought the above product and have an allergy or intolerance to milk or milk constituents and/or a sensitivity to sulphur dioxide and/or sulphites, do not eat it. Instead return it to the store from where it was bought for a full refund.“
Asda confirmed that customers can receive a full refund without a receipt and added:
“We are very sorry for any inconvenience caused. If you would like any further information please contact Asda Customer Relations – 08009520101.“
Packaging Error Traced to Incorrect Product Substitution
The issue stems from a packaging mistake, where some units of pork belly slices were mispacked with tomato and mozzarella pork meatballs. The substituted product contains undeclared ingredients not suitable for all consumers.
This recall follows a similar case reported by Aldi. The retailer pulled its Inspired Cuisine Baby Potatoes with Herbs and Butter after it was discovered that the 385g pack, with a use-by date of April 12, 2025, contained milk, which was not listed on the label.
An Aldi spokesperson said :
“Customers are asked to return this product to their nearest store, where a full refund will be given. We apologise that this product did not meet our normal high standards and thank you for your co-operation.“
