In a significant move aimed at making grocery shopping more affordable, Co-op has introduced its largest-ever price match initiative. The scheme, which kicks off today, will match the prices of over 100 everyday essentials to those of Aldi, the UK’s renowned budget supermarket. 

This new offer is available across all of Co-op’s 2,400 stores and will be extended to delivery platforms including Shop.coop, Deliveroo, and Uber Eats.

With the rising cost of living, many UK shoppers are increasingly turning to discount stores like Aldi for their everyday groceries. Now, Co-op is responding by making their prices more competitive without compromising on quality. 

The scheme is set to be a game-changer for the convenience store sector, offering better value on popular items such as milk, bread, eggs, and fresh fruit.

Price Matching With Aldi

The Co-op’s price match offer will cover a wide range of products, including Co-op’s own-brand items. Key staples such as a pint of British milk, now priced at 85p, and Co-op medium free-range eggs (6-pack) for £1.45, are part of the deal. 

According to Matt Hood, Co-op’s managing director, the new initiative is a direct response to the demand for more affordable shopping options. “I am very clear that, in this current economic climate, price is most often the deciding food shopping factor for our members and customers.” Hood said.

The move is notable as it marks the first time a UK convenience retailer has launched a price match scheme on delivery platforms like Deliveroo and Uber Eats. This decision further expands the reach of the initiative, enabling more people to access these low-cost groceries from the comfort of their homes.

Co-op’s Broader Investment in Value

This price match scheme is part of Co-op’s wider £170 million investment to offer better value to its six million members. The membership scheme, which costs £1, has already attracted over a million regular shoppers who benefit from exclusive discounts on essential items. 

The decision to price match Aldi comes as part of Co-op’s ongoing strategy to strengthen its position in the highly competitive convenience store market, which has long struggled with price perception compared to larger supermarkets.

By focusing on offering quality at a price comparable to Aldi’s, Co-op hopes to bridge the gap between convenience and value. While the initiative currently targets its members, Co-op’s move is expected to shake up the sector, with competitors like Tesco and Asda already scaling back similar schemes.

The price match programme, which includes items like Co-op chopped tomatoes for 47p, is a bold step in the supermarket’s efforts to stay relevant amid the challenges of a cost-conscious consumer base. As the cost of living continues to impact shoppers’ choices, the Co-op’s initiative represents a strategic response to evolving customer needs.
