Aldi is preparing to install solar panels at 230 more UK supermarkets as part of a £17.5 million investment designed to reduce electricity costs and reliance on the national grid. The rollout will take place between 2027 and 2031, expanding the retailer’s use of renewable energy across its growing store network.
Aldi Expands Solar Power Across Hundreds of UK Stores
According to Express.co.uk, Aldi announced the investment on October 29, confirming plans to make rooftop solar installations a more common feature of its British supermarkets.
The German discount retailer, which operates more than 1,000 stores across the UK, estimates that each solar installation could supply up to 30% of a store’s annual electricity requirements.
That would allow participating supermarkets to generate a portion of their electricity directly from sunlight rather than purchasing all of it through the grid. Actual production will depend on factors such as roof space, system capacity, and available sunlight.
The £17.5 million commitment follows an existing £8.4 million solar installation program covering 100 additional stores during 2025 and 2026. Together, the two investments represent approximately £26 million in planned solar spending by 2031.
Aldi expects more than 500 of its UK stores to have solar panels installed by the end of 2026, giving the company an established network of solar-equipped locations before the next phase begins.
Why Aldi Wants More Solar Panels on Its Supermarkets
Aldi’s strategy centers on using existing supermarket rooftops to generate electricity without requiring additional land.
Jonathan Neale, Managing Director of National Real Estate at Aldi UK, explained the practical reasoning behind the expansion.
“We have plenty of space on our store roofs, so it makes sense to use it,” Neale said.
He also outlined how the company intends to incorporate renewable energy into its regular operations.
“We want solar power to become a normal part of how we run our stores, and this investment will help us bring it to even more locations over the coming years. By generating more of our own electricity, we can reduce our reliance on the grid and make our stores more sustainable.”
The investment reflects a shift toward on-site electricity generation, allowing supermarkets to meet some of their energy needs through infrastructure installed directly on their buildings.

Seven New Aldi Stores Are Also Opening in November
The solar announcement comes as Aldi continues expanding its physical presence in the UK.
The supermarket has confirmed plans to open seven new stores across England in November 2026, creating up to 210 jobs. Each location could employ as many as 30 people.
The openings will begin on November 12 in Basildon, Essex, followed by four further launches on November 19 and two on November 26.
The confirmed schedule includes:
- November 12: Basildon, Essex
- November 19: Newport, Isle of Wight
- November 19: Matlock, Derbyshire
- November 19: Stepney Green, London
- November 26: Willesden, London
- November 26: Orrell, Wigan
- November 26: Waterlooville, Hampshire
Two of the new supermarkets will serve London neighborhoods, while the remaining five will expand Aldi’s presence across other parts of England.
Aldi’s Long-Term Plans Extend Beyond Solar Energy
The November openings form part of Aldi’s £370 million investment in its UK store estate during 2026, a separate commitment from the retailer’s longer-term solar expansion.
The company is working toward a target of 1,500 UK stores, combining new openings with investments in its existing properties.
Its planned solar rollout will run through 2031, with £17.5 million allocated to installations at 230 additional supermarkets.
