Lloyds Banking Group has confirmed a further round of branch closures across the UK, with 233 locations set to shut in 2026 and additional closures already scheduled for early 2027. The move affects Lloyds, Halifax and Bank of Scotland branches as part of an ongoing restructuring of its physical network.

Lloyds Bank Branch Closures Across Multiple Brands

The latest update includes 48 Halifax branches and 31 Lloyds locations among those due to close in 2026. Additional Bank of Scotland sites are also included in the wider programme.

The group’s latest figures bring the total number of planned closures for 2026 to 233 branches across the UK. A further 12 closures have already been confirmed for early 2027.

Lloyds Banking Group has closed nearly 1,600 branches nationwide since 2015, making it one of the largest reductions in physical banking networks in the UK during that period.

Shift Towards Digital Banking

The bank has pointed to continued changes in customer behaviour, particularly the decline in branch visits and the increased use of online and mobile banking services. This trend has been a key factor in the ongoing reduction of physical locations, with more customers managing accounts digitally rather than in-branch.

Despite the closures, the group says it continues to offer face-to-face support through alternative channels, including community-based banking services.

Alternative Services For Customers

Lloyds has highlighted a range of alternative banking options available to customers affected by branch closures. These include community bankers operating in local areas, access to banking services through Post Office branches, and cash deposit facilities via PayPoint locations across the UK.

The group states that these services are intended to maintain access to basic banking functions, particularly for customers who may not use digital platforms. Additional support measures are also said to be in place for vulnerable customers who may be more affected by the loss of local branches.

Company Statement On Closures

Lloyds Banking Group says the restructuring reflects changing customer preferences and aims to balance physical and digital service provision. The group has stated that it continues to invest in its digital platforms while maintaining alternative in-person options where possible.

According to the bank, the combination of online services, community banking and partner networks is designed to provide continued access to banking services across the UK.

Wider Context Of UK Branch Reductions

The latest announcement continues a long-term trend of bank branch reductions across the UK financial sector. Since 2015, major banks have progressively reduced physical locations as digital banking adoption has increased, reshaping how customers access everyday financial services.

The 2026 and 2027 closures form part of this broader shift, with further changes expected as banks continue to adjust their branch networks.
