Santander has announced the closure of 40 branches across the UK in April and May 2026. This decision marks yet another step in the ongoing trend of high street banks scaling back their physical presence. As online banking continues to surge in popularity, customers will now have to adapt to a digital-first world, one where fewer in-person services are available. With 96% of transactions already conducted online, the bank’s latest move is a bold signal of how the industry is evolving. But for many, especially vulnerable customers, this shift raises concerns about accessibility and the future of traditional banking services.

A Strategic Move to Online Banking

Santander’s decision to close 40 branches follows a series of similar actions by banks across the UK, as reported by Express.co.uk, In January, the bank announced 44 closures, with four branches set to shut down permanently by 2027. This reduction in physical locations is part of a larger trend where banks are moving away from brick-and-mortar structures to embrace the digital era. With more customers opting for the convenience of online banking, physical branches have become increasingly redundant. Santander joins other major players like Lloyds Bank, which is also reducing its high street footprint.

Despite the closures, Santander has reassured its customers that it will continue to invest in its branch network.

“We will continue to invest in both our branch network – comprising of full-service branches, counter-free branches, reduced-hour branches, Santander Locals, and our increasingly popular work cafes – as well as our digital banking services, so we can be there to support our customers however they choose to bank with us,” a representative from Santander said.

However, the impact of this shift is a concern for many, particularly those who rely on in-person services. Vulnerable customers, including elderly individuals and those without reliable internet access, may struggle to adapt to this digital transition. Campaign groups and MPs have raised alarms over how these closures will disproportionately affect those who have limited access to online banking or transportation to reach alternative locations.
