As 2025 draws to a close, discount supermarket Aldi has issued a reminder to customers regarding its New Year opening hours. With many planning last-minute shopping trips to prepare for the celebrations, Aldi is encouraging shoppers to plan ahead.
The retailer, which has consistently ranked among the most affordable supermarkets in the UK, has also highlighted its seasonal initiatives, including food donations to charities and a series of industry accolades for its festive range.
Adjusted Opening Hours for New Year Period
Aldi stores are currently open and operating normal hours until Wednesday 31 December. According to BirminghamLive, branches will close earlier than usual at 6pm on New Year’s Eve and remain closed throughout New Year’s Day, reopening on Friday 2 January. The confirmed opening schedule for this week is as follows:
- Monday 29 and Tuesday 30 December: 8am to 8pm
- Wednesday 31 December: 8am to 6pm
- Thursday 1 January: Closed
- Friday 2 January: 8am to 10pm
Customers are advised to check local store hours online, as there may be some variation depending on location.
This early closure comes after Aldi gave its staff Christmas Day off, allowing colleagues time to spend with their families. The supermarket’s policy of closing on key holidays has been in place for several years and is in line with its approach to employee welfare.
Holiday Donations and National Recognition
Beyond store hours, Aldi has underscored its continued commitment to supporting communities during the festive period. The supermarket expects to donate around one million meals to those in need over Christmas and New Year. This is being facilitated through its ongoing partnership with Neighbourly, which links stores with local food banks and community organisations.
Food surplus will be collected and distributed after stores close early on both Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve. The initiative is part of a broader drive to reduce food waste and provide support to vulnerable households during the winter season.
Aldi’s festive range has also received national recognition. According to the same source, the retailer was recently named Christmas Retailer of the Year for the sixth consecutive time by the Quality Food Awards. In addition, it was awarded Best Value Retailer for Christmas 2025 by Good Housekeeping.
In the Good Housekeeping Institute’s Christmas Taste Test 2025, Aldi secured 20 separate accolades. Among the highlighted products were its Specially Selected Double Wrapped Pigs in Blankets and its Ultimate Wagyu Fat Roast Potatoes, both part of its premium own-brand range.
Aldi has also been confirmed by Which? as the UK’s Cheapest Supermarket of the Year for four years running, reinforcing its value-focused reputation among British shoppers. With the holiday season nearing its conclusion, Aldi’s final week of festive operations combines limited trading hours, ongoing community support and recognition for its Christmas offerings, all contributing to a strong finish for the retailer in 2025.
