From next Monday, Leeds households receiving Council Tax Support will benefit from a £120 payment aimed at easing the financial burden of rising living costs. This latest measure, part of the Household Support Fund, seeks to support vulnerable families, especially as winter approaches.
These payments are a lifeline for many facing financial strain due to increasing energy bills, food costs, and general inflation. The fund is just one part of the government’s wider strategy to mitigate the effects of the ongoing cost-of-living crisis.
Who is Eligible for the Payments?
The new support scheme, which will start on October 13, 2025, is aimed at residents of Leeds who are currently receiving Council Tax Support. To qualify, applicants must meet specific criteria as of October 13. Those with dependent children are eligible for £120, while those without will receive £55.
The payments will be made in the form of Post Office vouchers, which can be redeemed for cash at participating branches. Leeds City Council confirmed that all eligible households will receive their vouchers by the end of November 2025. As the council is directly contacting recipients, eligible residents are advised to keep an eye out for notifications. According to Leeds City Council, the council’s system will use information from Council Tax claims to determine eligibility.
This initiative is part of a wider, government-funded programme designed to ease the impact of winter on low-income households, particularly those with young children. The Household Support Fund is a nationwide effort, but eligibility criteria and payment methods can vary between local authorities.
Additional Support for Vulnerable Residents
In addition to the regular payments, Leeds City Council is also offering additional emergency support for residents in need. If households require immediate assistance with essential items such as food, energy, or household goods, they can access help through the Local Welfare Support Scheme.
This emergency fund is designed for those in critical need, though applicants are limited to one application per year. Residents can contact the Local Welfare Support Scheme directly on 0113 376 0330 for further assistance.
The council works with community and voluntary organisations across the region, ensuring that those facing financial hardship can access crucial supplies. This extended support builds on the council’s broader efforts to alleviate the challenges posed by the ongoing cost of living crisis.
Leeds City Council has also outlined that the fund may cover the costs of energy bills and supermarket vouchers, targeting those who are most at risk. These initiatives are part of a broader £742 million fund available across England, distributed by local councils, to provide a much-needed safety net for the most vulnerable during the colder months.
