M60 Motorway Undergoes Major Changes: 50MPH Limit Kicks in for 180,000 Daily Drivers

Starting today, the M60 motorway is undergoing significant changes, including a reduced speed limit of 50mph. With work planned at key junctions, drivers are being urged to allow extra travel time. Roadworks will span several months, with nighttime closures in place.

A significant change to the M60 motorway, one of the busiest routes in the UK, is set to take effect today. With an estimated 180,000 drivers using this vital road daily, the introduction of a reduced speed limit will impact the commute for thousands.

The National Highways programme, designed to improve safety along the motorway, will introduce a 50 mph speed limit on a long stretch of the M60 for the next three months. Drivers are advised to prepare for delays as the project involves extensive works at key junctions.

Speed Limit Reduction and Safety Works

The newly implemented 50 mph speed limit stretches from Junction 16 ay Clifton, and ends east of Junction 17 at Simister Island. The change is part of a comprehensive safety programme across several junctions on the M60, which will involve both daytime and nighttime works.

According to National Highways, engineers will install a new central reservation between Junctions 16 and 18, aiming to improve road safety and prevent accidents. The works, scheduled to conclude by August, are expected to lead to significant delays as traffic flow is affected by the lowered speed limit and narrowed lanes.

While much of the roadwork will be completed overnight to reduce disruption, the speed limit will be in effect 24/7. Drivers are encouraged to plan their journeys carefully, allowing additional time for travel.

Nighttime Closures and Resurfacing at Junction 17

In addition to the reduced speed limit, National Highways will carry out resurfacing work at Junction 17. The resurfacing is scheduled for overnight closures, which will take place from June 16 to July 4, according to official reports.

The road will be closed during these hours, and diversions will be clearly signposted to guide motorists safely around the affected areas.

This resurfacing project aims to upgrade the infrastructure at one of the busiest junctions along the M60. While the closures may inconvenience some drivers, National Highways has emphasised that the coordination of these works with nearby projects is designed to minimise overall disruption.

Drivers using the M60 are reminded to expect delays during this period of improvement work. With safety measures in place and the coordination of multiple projects, the changes are expected to result in a smoother and safer motorway experience in the long term.
