Millions of people receiving Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) benefits could now access low-cost broadband for as little as £12 per month. As reported by Birmingham Live, a new system has been introduced that allows broadband providers to quickly verify eligibility through a DWP IT system, making it easier for low-income households to sign up for social tariffs.
The discounted broadband offers are available to those receiving Universal Credit, Pension Credit, Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Income Support, Jobseeker’s Allowance, Employment and Support Allowance (ESA), Attendance Allowance, Reduced Earnings Allowance, or Care Leavers’ Support.
How Social Tariff Broadband Helps Low-Income Households
Social tariffs are discounted broadband deals designed to help struggling households stay connected. Many people, particularly older individuals and those on low incomes, rely on the internet to stay in touch with loved ones and access essential services.
Fran McSweeney, Head of National Services at Independent Age, highlighted the importance of affordable internet access for those facing financial difficulties, stating:
“The internet can help people in later life stay in touch with friends and family and to access information on financial entitlements, deals and services but it has to be affordable.”
She emphasised that those on means-tested benefits should check their eligibility as discounted broadband can provide a crucial financial lifeline for those in need.
How to Apply for £12 Broadband
Those who qualify for social tariff broadband can check their eligibility through the Ofcom website, where a list of participating broadband providers is available. Many major providers, including BT, Sky, Virgin Media, Vodafone, NOW Broadband, Hyperoptic, KCOM, and 4th Utility, offer social tariff deals starting at £12 per month.
McSweeney urged eligible customers to take action, stating:
“You can find out whether you’re eligible and for a list of what providers are offering through the Ofcom website. These start at £12 per month and are designed with customers who need extra support in mind. Contact your current supplier for more information.”
For those who may be unaware of the availability of these tariffs, broadband providers are now able to directly check eligibility through a new DWP system, removing the need for complex application processes.
