The Royal Borough of Greenwich Council is taking action to help residents struggling with rising living costs. Through the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Household Support Fund, the council is issuing £250 payments to eligible households, offering much-needed financial relief as winter expenses continue to weigh on families.

Who Qualifies for the Payment?

The payments will be provided to two specific groups:

  • Greenwich care-leavers, young adults who have aged out of the care system and may face financial instability.
  • Households with no recourse to public funds (NRPF)—residents whose immigration status prevents them from claiming certain benefits.

Eligibility is determined through the council’s Care Leavers’ and NRPF teams. Those who qualify will receive a direct notification via text or email explaining how to claim their payment. Residents who believe they are eligible but haven’t been contacted are encouraged to reach out to their personal adviser or caseworker.

Financial Aid for Residents in Temporary Housing

In addition to the £250 cost of living payment, the council is providing financial assistance to residents placed in temporary hotel accommodation. Eligible individuals will receive £10 per person, per week to help cover basic expenses.

Those currently living in a hotel who have not yet received this payment should speak to their Temporary Accommodation Officer for further guidance.

Emergency Support Scheme for Financial Crises

Beyond these direct payments, the council operates an Emergency Support Scheme (ESS) to assist residents facing unexpected financial difficulties. This program provides:

  • Community support awards, which help cover essential household items like furniture.
  • Emergency support payments, offering one-time cash assistance for urgent financial needs.

The council has expanded funding for the scheme to ensure more residents can receive support during difficult times. Importantly, any Royal Greenwich resident can apply, with awards granted based on eligibility criteria.

How to apply for financial support

Residents in need of assistance can learn more or submit an application through the Emergency Support Scheme page on the Royal Greenwich Council’s website.
