Last week, the UK Home Office made headlines by announcing an 18-month extension to expiring Ukrainian visas, a decision which comes roughly a year after Russia's invasion of Ukraine.

UK Government Offers 18-Month Visa Extension for Ukrainian Residents

The UK Home Office recently introduced an 18-month visa extension for Ukrainians living in the UK, who are due to expire in March 2023. The initiative aims to provide "certainty and reassurance" to over 200,000 Ukrainians who sought refuge in the UK following Russia's incursion into Ukraine in February 2022.

The extension aims to support Ukrainians facing homelessness and financial hardship. While local authorities are urging the government to re-evaluate financial support for vulnerable Ukrainians, the new visa extension offers a sense of security in the current turmoil in their home country.

Community support has been crucial in welcoming Ukrainian refugees. Initiatives such as the Ukraine Family Scheme, Homes for Ukraine and the Ukraine Extension Scheme have enabled Ukrainians to be granted permission to stay for three years.

The Homes for Ukraine scheme provides households sponsoring refugees with monthly allowances of £350 in the first year and £500 in the following two years to help them meet their expenses, with the government extending these thank you payments for a third year.

Homelessness: a Looming Threat

Despite councils helping more than 200,000 Ukrainian refugees to settle in the UK, many remain at risk of homelessness. The Local Government Association's Roger Gough highlighted councils' ongoing efforts to support asylum seekers and resettlement, calling visa schemes a "lifeline" for those fleeing conflict.

However, without additional government support, a significant number of Ukrainians living in the UK are at risk of becoming homeless.

New Visa Extension Programme at a Glance

Reassurance for Relocated Ukrainians

The new 18-month visa extension scheme is intended to provide reassurance to the more than 200,000 Ukrainians currently residing in the UK, many of whom fled the Russian invasion. According to the Home Office, the programme is designed to provide "certainty and reassurance" to Ukrainians whose visas were due to expire in March 2023.

Safe Haven in the Midst of Turmoil

The British government has positioned itself as a sanctuary for Ukrainians seeking to flee the violence.

This new visa extension scheme reassures Ukrainians in the UK about their future as the war continues, and we will continue to provide a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict.

Says Tom Pursglove, Minister for Legal Migration.

Eduard Fesko, Chargé d'Affaires at the Ukrainian Embassy, expresses his gratitude for the UK's generosity, highlighting the considerable help given to temporarily displaced Ukrainians.

Do You Need to Apply for The Visa Extension?

There is no need for Ukrainians to apply for an 18-month extension. According to the Home Office, visas will be automatically extended at no cost to the visa holder. Ukrainians should wait for official notification of the extension before travelling outside the UK. Further information on the extension process will be provided in the coming months.
