Pension Credit is a vital benefit designed to help older adults on a low income. If you’re over State Pension age and finding it difficult to make ends meet, Pension Credit could offer you the extra support you need. This financial lifeline tops up your income to a guaranteed minimum level—£218.15 per week for single pensioners or £332.95 per week for couples. And if you have disabilities or caring responsibilities, you could receive even more.

What is Pension Credit?

Pension Credit is a means-tested benefit aimed at older people who are on a low income. If you meet the criteria, you could be entitled to extra financial support. The main feature of this benefit is that it guarantees a minimum weekly income, ensuring that pensioners don’t fall below a certain financial threshold.

But here’s the surprising part: nearly 760,000 pensioners who could be benefiting from this support aren’t making a claim. That’s a significant number of people missing out on funds that could make life a little easier.

Extra Benefits for Eligible Pensioners

If you’re eligible for Pension Credit, you’re also likely to qualify for a range of other benefits and support:

  • Housing Benefit (if you rent your home)
  • Support for Mortgage Interest (if you own your home)
  • Council Tax discount
  • Free TV Licence for those aged 75 and over
  • Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses, and hospital transport costs
  • Help with heating bills through the Warm Home Discount Scheme and Winter Fuel Payment
  • Discounts on the Royal Mail redirection service when moving house

These benefits can significantly reduce the pressure on your finances, helping to cover essential costs like housing and heating.

Disability and Carer Support

If you receive a disability benefit, such as Attendance Allowance, the middle or highest rate of the Care Component of Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Personal Independence Payment (PIP), or Adult Disability Payment (ADP), you may be entitled to extra Pension Credit. This could add £81.50 per week (or £326 per month) to your payments.

Similarly, if you’re a carer receiving Carer’s Allowance, you could receive £45.60 per week in additional support. Even if you’re not currently receiving Carer’s Allowance, you might still qualify for extra Pension Credit through an underlying entitlement, especially if you’re receiving a higher amount from another income-related benefit like the State Pension.

Time-Sensitive: Apply Before December 21, 2024

There’s a critical deadline approaching: December 21, 2024. After this date, changes to the eligibility for Winter Fuel Payments will mean that only those receiving income-related benefits like Pension Credit will qualify for this crucial heating support. Winter Fuel Payments range between £100 and £300 annually, and if you successfully claim Pension Credit before this date, you’ll also be eligible for backdated Winter Fuel Payments.

To get these payments, even a small Pension Credit entitlement of just £1 per week is enough to unlock this extra financial help.

Common Misconceptions: You Might Still Be Eligible

One of the most common misconceptions is that people with savings or property may not be eligible for Pension Credit. In fact, your income and savings are what matter most. If you’re still living on a low income, you could qualify for support, even if you own your home or have savings. So, don’t rule yourself out—check your eligibility to see if you can get the support you deserve.

How Much Could You Receive?

Pension Credit ensures that you won’t fall below the minimum income threshold. The amounts are:

  • Single pensioners: at least £218.15 per week
  • Couples: at least £332.95 per week

In addition, if you have caring responsibilities or receive disability benefits, your amount could be even higher. So, it’s worth checking to ensure you’re not missing out on any extra support.

How to Check and Apply

You can quickly check whether you’re eligible by using the Pension Credit calculator on GOV.UK. The calculator will ask you to provide details such as your earnings, pensions, savings, and any disability or care benefits you receive. After you answer a few simple questions, the tool will estimate how much Pension Credit you could receive each week.

If you prefer personal assistance, you can contact the Pension Credit helpline at 0800 99 1234, where advisors are available from 8am to 6pm, Monday to Friday. Note that during the festive period, helpline services will be unavailable on December 25, 26, 27 and January 1.

The Application Process

You can apply for Pension Credit up to four months before you reach State Pension age. If you’re eligible, your claim can be backdated for up to three months, meaning you could receive up to three months of extra support in your first payment.

To apply, you will need:

  • Your National Insurance number
  • Information about your income, savings, and investments
  • Your bank account details if applying by phone or post

It’s also worth noting that mixed-age couples—where one partner is over State Pension age and the other is younger—are no longer eligible for Pension Credit until both partners reach State Pension age.

Don’t Wait – Apply Today

Whether for yourself or a loved one, now is the time to check if you’re eligible for Pension Credit. The process is simple, and applying could lead to significant extra financial support. You could be entitled to money that helps with your day-to-day costs, including housing, heating, and essential care.
