Essex is under a tornado warning as a severe thunderstorm rolls across England. Residents are preparing for potentially catastrophic weather conditions.
Thunderstorms Could Trigger a Tornado in Essex
Powerful thunderstorms sweeping across England have brought hazardous weather conditions to Essex and the rest of East Anglia, including the risk of isolated tornadoes.
According to the Tornado and Storm Research Organisation (TORRO), Essex and the surrounding areas are under a tornado warning until the end of the evening. As well as the possibility of tornadoes, the area could experience strong wind gusts of up to 60mph, large hail, lightning and heavy rainfall.
Dangerous Wind and Rain
Two yellow weather alerts issued by the UK Met Office remain in force for Essex until tonight. The warnings state that bands of heavy rain could produce showers lasting between three and six hours, with some places receiving up to 40 millimetres of rain. Heavy rain is falling on already saturated ground, increasing the risk of flooding. The powerful winds that accompany the storms could reach 80 km/h in some areas.
Tornadoes and “Mesocyclones” Risk
Although tornadoes are relatively rare in England, today’s volatile weather conditions increase the possibility of brief tornado touchdowns in Essex and East Anglia, according to TORRO. The organisation also notes the possibility of ‘mesocyclones’, which are small, short-lived circulations that can produce localised wind damage, as well as cloud features such as wall cloud that often precede tornado formation.
What to Do if a Tornado Warning Is Issued in Your Area
When faced with such imminent danger, it is essential to remain vigilant and well-prepared. Here are some essential measures to take:
- Stay up to date with the latest weather forecasts and advisories from reliable sources.
- Stock up on essential supplies, including food, water, medication and emergency equipment such as torches and batteries.
- Find and designate a safe room or place inside your home where you can take shelter during the storm.
When the storm is approaching, it is essential to give priority to safety. If officials advise sheltering in place, follow these guidelines:
- Close all windows and doors to prevent debris from entering your home.
- Go to the designated safe room or area, preferably an interior room on the lowest level of the house.
- Avoid using electrical appliances or plumbing fixtures during the storm to reduce electrical and flooding risks.
The Essex community should remain alert to further warnings and instructions from local authorities regarding this severe weather outbreak. Unsettled weather is expected to continue to affect the area overnight before dissipating eastwards.
