With the summer months approaching, millions of families in the United States will rely on Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits to help make ends meet. This year, qualifying households could also benefit from SUN Bucks, providing extra support during the summer when children are not receiving school meals.
For families who rely on these essential programs, understanding the financial support available is key. The summer months often come with additional challenges as many children miss out on school-provided meals. To help offset this, both SNAP and SUN Bucks provide critical assistance.
SNAP Benefits: What’s Available This Summer?
According to the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), SNAP payments are issued monthly to eligible households. For the summer of 2025, individuals can receive up to $292 per month, while a two-person household could qualify for up to $536.
The amount increases with household size—households of three can get up to $768, and those with four members can access up to $975.
These payments are calculated based on income, household size, and other factors. To qualify, applicants must meet specific income and resource limits, which are updated annually with the cost of living adjustments (COLA). As of 2025, these limits will remain in place until September 30.
For those with disabilities or seniors, higher resource limits apply. A household that includes a person with a disability or a senior (aged 60 or above) can have up to $4,500 in countable resources, compared to the standard $3,000 limit for others. It is essential that applicants verify their eligibility before applying to ensure they meet all requirements.
SUN Bucks: Extra Support for Children During the Summer
In addition to SNAP, children who are eligible for benefits through the National School Lunch or Breakfast Program may qualify for SUN Bucks, providing additional support during the summer months.
According to the USDA, families with children enrolled in SNAP and other related programs can receive up to $120 per child over the summer. This assistance is distributed in three monthly payments of $40 during June, July, and August.
SUN Bucks are particularly beneficial for families who rely on school meals to feed their children during the academic year. With schools closed, these benefits ensure that children continue to have access to nutritious food when it is most needed.
The funds are provided through the Electronic Benefits Transfer (EBT) system, and eligible families are typically automatically enrolled.
Notably, SUN Bucks can be used in the same way as SNAP benefits to purchase eligible food items at authorized grocery stores, making them a seamless addition to existing food assistance programs.
