Saputo Cheese USA Inc. has issued a voluntary recall of certain Great Value cottage cheese products after discovering a pasteurization issue that could pose health risks. The recall, affecting multiple U.S. states, follows concerns that liquid dairy ingredients in the products may not have been properly pasteurized according to regulatory standards.

The company, in collaboration with the California Department of Food and Agriculture, identified the issue during routine pasteurizer troubleshooting. While no illnesses or hospitalizations have been reported, authorities have emphasized the significant health risk of consuming underpasteurized dairy products, especially for vulnerable populations such as the elderly, young children, and those with weakened immune systems.

Affected Products and Distribution Areas

The recall affects a range of Great Value cottage cheese varieties, distributed between February 17 and February 20, 2026, to Walmart stores across 23 states. The recalled products include various sizes of fat-free, low-fat, and full-fat small curd cottage cheese, all sold in white plastic containers. According to the company, these products were sold in Alaska, Alabama, Arkansas, Arizona, California, Colorado, Georgia, Iowa, Idaho, Illinois, Kansas, Kentucky, Louisiana, Missouri, Mississippi, Montana, New Mexico, Nevada, Oregon, Texas, Tennessee, Utah, Washington, and Wyoming.

The specific product names affected include “Great Value Fat Free Small Curd Cottage Cheese (0% Milkfat),” “Great Value Lowfat Small Curd Cottage Cheese (2% Milkfat),” and “Great Value Small Curd Cottage Cheese (4% milkfat minimum),” available in 16 oz., 24 oz., and 3 lb. containers. The company has advised customers to check the “Best By” dates on the lids, which range from April 1 to April 3, 2026, depending on the product.

Health Risks and Customer Instructions

While no reports of illness have emerged, Saputo has strongly recommended that consumers refrain from eating any affected products. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), underpasteurized dairy can harbor harmful bacteria, which may lead to foodborne illness, particularly among those with compromised immune systems. The affected pasteurizer has since been returned to full operational standards, with verification from state authorities ensuring that the issue has been resolved.

Consumers who have purchased any of the recalled products should either dispose of them or return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. Saputo is offering a dedicated hotline at 1-888-587-2423 for customers seeking additional information or assistance regarding the recall.

This recall is a reminder of the importance of maintaining rigorous food safety standards. Saputo, one of the world’s largest dairy processors, has assured the public that no other products from the affected production facility were compromised.
