A popular dark chocolate product sold nationwide has been urgently recalled over the presence of an undeclared milk ingredient. The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) warns the allergen poses a potentially life-threatening risk to consumers with dairy allergies.
Michigan-based Lipari Foods issued the recall after discovering that its 14-ounce packages of JLM Dark Chocolate Nonpareils may contain milk, despite no such indication on the packaging. The recall affects six specific lot codes and applies to products distributed across the United States.
National Recall After Allergen Alert Triggers FDA Intervention
The FDA issued an urgent public warning on Friday after being informed that certain batches of JLM Dark Chocolate Nonpareils, distributed by Lipari Foods, contained milk not listed on the product label.
According to the agency’s bulletin, consumption of these mislabeled sweets could lead to “serious or life-threatening allergic reactions” in individuals with dairy allergies. The issue originated with a notification from Weave Nut Company, Lipari’s distributor, who flagged the risk of dairy presence in the confectionery.
The affected product is sold in clear plastic tubs and is distinguishable by the following lot codes: 28202501A, 29202501A, 23202504A, 14202505A, 15202505A, and 03202506A. Each of these can be found on the label located at the bottom of the packaging.
As of the announcement date, no illnesses or allergic reactions have been reported. Still, the FDA advises all consumers with a milk allergy to avoid the product and return it to the point of purchase for a full refund.
This recall is categorised as Class I—the most serious type—indicating a reasonable probability that use of the product will cause adverse health consequences or death.
Product Distributed Nationwide Before Alert Raised
Despite the recall now in place, the chocolate treats had already been widely distributed across retail outlets in the United States before the contamination risk was identified. Retailers are currently working to remove the affected stock from shelves, while consumers are encouraged to check their homes for products with the specified lot numbers.
The FDA has reiterated that food producers must adhere strictly to labelling regulations to ensure consumer safety. Companies found in breach of these rules can face significant penalties and product seizures. The case is under review as part of the agency’s standard investigation procedure.
