The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed that individuals on four specific disability benefits might get up to £9,747 in additional support annually to help alleviate the strain of growing living expenses.

In addition to those who receive Personal Independence Payment (PIP), Disability Living Allowance (DLA), Attendance Allowance, and Carer's Allowance, this rise will take effect on April 7, 2024. Part of a larger effort, the measure aims to give needy groups financial support during a difficult time for the UK economy.

DWP's Annual Increase for Disability Benefits

The DWP’s latest decision includes a 1.7 % uplift across these benefits, directly aimed at those living with disabilities and those providing essential care. The increase in payments is anticipated to provide a much-needed cushion, especially as inflation and essential costs continue to rise. For individuals receiving the highest awards, this adjustment could translate into nearly £10,000 in additional support over a year.

Moreover, The Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which assists individuals with disabilities by covering their additional daily expenses, will see its various components adjusted. For instance, the daily living component and mobility component—which assess individuals' ability to manage daily tasks and move around — will be raised. Similar adjustments will apply to the Disability Living Allowance (DLA), which aids children and adults under 65 with mobility and care needs.

Breakdown of New Rates

With the 1.7% increase in effect, those on disability benefits will receive payments ranging from £29.20 to £187.45 weekly, depending on the level of support required. For example, the lower care award under DLA or Child Disability Payment (CDP) will increase to £29.20 from £28.70 per week.

Similarly, the enhanced rate for the daily living component will rise to £110.40 from £108.55 weekly. Mobility rates are also set to increase, with the standard level at £29.20 and the enhanced level at £77.05.

Changes to Carer's Allowance

Carer’s Allowance, another critical component of the DWP's assistance programs, will also experience a rise. The new weekly payment will be £83.30 (up from £81.90), while the four-week pay period will see an increase to £333.20.

The weekly earnings threshold for Carer’s Allowance will increase from £151 to £196, allowing carers to work up to 16 hours at the National Living Wage without impacting their benefit. This change enables carers to earn more while still qualifying for support, a crucial adjustment for those balancing work with caregiving responsibilities.

Financial Relief Amid Cost of Living Pressures

The DWP’s announcement reflects ongoing efforts to provide financial assistance to those most affected by the cost-of-living crisis. Many disabled individuals and their caregivers face heightened financial challenges due to the added expenses related to health, mobility, and daily assistance.

Individuals currently receiving PIP, DLA, Attendance Allowance, or Carer’s Allowance will see these adjustments automatically applied, with no need to reapply or complete additional forms.

However, new applicants may need to undergo an assessment process to verify eligibility for PIP, which can include in-person, phone, or video evaluations.
