Those who have lost their winter fuel payments from the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Labour government are due to get it.
Pensioners Losing Winter Fuel Payment to Receive £175 ‘Safety Net’ Cash
Thousands of pensioners who are no longer eligible for the Winter Fuel Payment will receive financial assistance of £175, thanks to Tower Hamlets Council's latest initiative.
This policy change caused by the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) and the Labour government is set to help many state pensioners suffering from the affected cuts.
Thousands of Pensioners to Get Winter Support
The council has launched a £1 million aid package as part of the extended Household Support Fund, aimed at helping vulnerable residents through the winter months.
Tower Hamlets Executive Mayor, Lutfur Rahman, expressed concern about the impact of making the Winter Fuel Payment means-tested. He noted that this decision could leave many pensioners unable to afford rising energy costs, possibly forcing them to avoid using their heating.
Rahman emphasized, “This creates a risk that pensioners will not turn their heating on for fear of not being able to pay the bills, which is wrong. This is why we are stepping in and providing a £175 safety net for those who will be missing out." The council estimates that around 5,000 pensioners will qualify for this assistance.
Encouraging Pension Credit Claims
Cllr Saied Ahmed, Cabinet Member for Resources and the Cost of Living, urged pensioners over 66 to apply for Pension Credit, which could increase their income and unlock additional benefits like help with housing costs, Council Tax, and heating bills.
In addition to the financial support, Warm Hubs will return this winter, offering residents a safe space to warm up, enjoy hot drinks, and access further support services. Last year, the hubs served thousands of cups of tea and healthy snacks to combat both fuel poverty and social isolation.
With over £110 million in unclaimed benefits from the DWP and local authority, Tower Hamlets continues to encourage residents to claim their entitlements.
