A nationwide recall of Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie has been expanded due to a potential choking hazard, sparking concern among consumers. The decision, announced by Mondelez Global and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), affects a range of products distributed across retail stores nationwide.
The recall, originally initiated in late December 2025, was expanded on December 30 to include additional best-by dates and product codes. The issue stems from small clumps of corn starch, which could pose a significant choking risk, especially to vulnerable groups such as young children and older adults.
The Scope of the Expanded Recall
The recall concerns specific batches of Chips Ahoy! Baked Bites Brookie, a brownie-cookie snack produced by Mondelez Global. The affected products include several different packaging sizes, ranging from individual pouches to larger carton packs. According to the FDA, the expansion added one best-by date and two new Unified Product Codes (UPCs) for products already included in the recall. The products affected by the recall are:
- A 22.4-ounce carton containing eight pouches, with best-by dates between May 9 and May 12, 2026, and a retail UPC of 44000086688.
- A 7-ounce carton containing five pouches, with best-by dates ranging from May 10 to May 18, 2026, and a retail UPC of 44000085650.
- A 2.8-ounce pouch with best-by dates from May 9 to May 12, 2026, and a retail UPC of 4400008667.
- A 1.4-ounce pouch with best-by dates from May 10 to May 18, 2026, and a retail UPC of 4400008566.
According to Mondelez, these products were distributed to a limited number of stores across the country. It is important to note that no other Chips Ahoy! or Mondelez items are part of the recall.
The Risk and Reason for the Recall
Mondelez has confirmed that the recall was prompted by a mixing error during production. The error led to the formation of small clumps of corn starch in the affected batches, which, according to the company, could be a choking hazard. According to the FDA, these clumps pose a risk particularly to young children and the elderly due to their size and properties. The company issued the recall “out of an abundance of caution” as no injuries or illnesses had been reported at the time.
The decision to recall the product was not made lightly. Mondelez’s commitment to consumer safety is evident in the swift action taken after the issue was identified. Although no incidents have been reported so far, the company has urged consumers to discard or return the products for a full refund.
The public has been advised to check their pantry for the affected product and follow the instructions provided by Mondelez. Consumers who have purchased the recalled items can contact the company directly at 1-855-535-5948, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. ET, for further details.
