As Americans prepare to observe Memorial Day, commemorating military personnel who died in service, many will also be making last-minute shopping runs for barbecues, travel supplies or community gatherings.
With the federal holiday prompting closures in government offices and banks, the availability of supermarkets and retail stores becomes a practical consideration for millions.
In 2025, Memorial Day retains its dual role as both a solemn occasion of remembrance and an unofficial launch of summer activities across the country. Knowing which stores are open can help consumers plan accordingly without disrupting the significance of the day.
Most supermarkets and retailers open with regular or modified hours
Many of the largest retail chains in the United States will be operating on Memorial Day, often with regular hours, according to company announcements compiled by multiple outlets including USA Today.
Walmart, Target, Trader Joe’s, and Whole Foods Market are among those keeping to their usual schedules. Walmart stores, for example, will operate from 6:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., while Target will also maintain regular business hours.
Kroger-owned chains such as Ralphs, King Soopers, Fred Meyer, and Smith’s Food and Drug will also remain open, though individual store hours may vary slightly by location.
Meijer has confirmed opening from 6:00 a.m. to midnight, and Aldi will function with a limited schedule, though specific times may differ regionally.
Other chains operating as usual include HEB, Food Lion, Harris Teeter, Winn-Dixie, Giant Eagle, and Market District. Members-only retailer Sam’s Club will operate reduced hours: from 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for Plus members and from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for Club members.
Some closures affect pharmacies and wholesale clubs
While the majority of grocery and retail outlets remain open, several notable closures will affect some consumers. Costco has confirmed that all its locations will be closed for the holiday, consistent with its policy of observing major U.S. holidays.
Pharmacies located within supermarkets also show a mixed schedule. Publix Pharmacies and Albertsons-affiliated pharmacies (including Safeway, Shaw’s, and Vons) may either be closed or operating on reduced hours, depending on location.
In addition to retail, banks and federal services will not operate on Memorial Day. According to official announcements, branches of Bank of America, Wells Fargo, Citibank, and JPMorgan Chase will remain closed. The United States Postal Service will also suspend all regular mail delivery services for the day.
For consumers, checking local hours remains advisable, especially when planning prescription pickups or bulk shopping.
