Grocery chain Meijer has announced a recall of specific packages of Frederik’s Dark Chocolate Almonds after the discovery of undeclared cashews, a serious allergen threat.

The contamination has the potential to cause life-threatening reactions for those with a cashew allergy, making this recall part of a broader wave of food safety issues affecting consumers in recent weeks.

The company issued the recall on June 13, alerting customers that the affected products were sold in several states across the Midwest. Meijer is advising those who have purchased the products to return them for a full refund. While no illnesses have been reported, the recall underscores the importance of allergen labelling and consumer safety.

Contaminated Products and Affected Regions

The recall includes two distinct packaging formats of Frederik’s Dark Chocolate Almonds. The first is the black stand-up pouches, which were sold at Meijer stores in Michigan, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio, Kentucky, and Wisconsin.

These pouches have a sell-by date of either 05/07/2026 or 05/28/2026. The second product affected by the recall is the 8-count, 1.5-ounce multi-pack boxes, which carry a sell-by date of 05/05/2026.

According to the press release from Meijer, the almonds were found to be mixed with dark chocolate cashews, an allergen that was not declared on the packaging. Cashew allergies are severe and can result in life-threatening reactions, prompting the urgent need for consumers to check their products.

Broader Trend of Allergen-Related Recalls

This recall follows a series of other similar incidents involving undeclared allergens. On the same day, Turkana Food Inc. issued a recall on 352 cases of Floria Dried Apricots, which contained undeclared sulfites.

Additionally, Breyers ice cream, manufactured by Unilever, recalled 6,668 cases of its Chocolate Truffle Ice Cream due to a mislabeling issue, as the product was found to contain almonds.

The frequency of these recalls points to a rising concern over allergen mismanagement in food products.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) continues to monitor and act on these safety risks, but experts warn that consumers must remain vigilant. Products with improper or missing allergen labels pose significant health risks, particularly for those with food sensitivities.
