Over 328,000 mini smoke alarms sold by the Home Shopping Network have been recalled after reports revealed potential malfunctions that could prevent the alarms from activating in the presence of smoke. The recall, announced by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), warns that the defect poses a serious risk of fire-related injuries or fatalities.
What Is Being Recalled?
The recall affects Samurai brand mini smoke alarms with the model number SM1, sold nationwide between July 2020 and November 2024. These alarms, available in white and silver plastic, were sold individually or in packs of two or three, retailing for $40 to $50. Each package included lithium-ion batteries, adhesive stickers, screws, mounting plates, and an instruction manual.
The model number can be found on the packaging, with the word “smoke” printed on the front of the alarm and “installed on” noted on the back.
Why Were the Alarms Recalled?
Three61, the Florida-based importer, received eight reports of smoke alarms failing to activate in the presence of smoke. Federal testing confirmed that at least one alarm did not meet smoke sensitivity standards, highlighting its potential inability to detect dangerous conditions. While no injuries have been reported, the malfunction increases the risk of smoke inhalation or worse in the event of a fire.
Steps for Consumers to Take
To address the issue, Three61 is offering free replacement alarms for consumers who own the affected units. Here’s how to participate in the recall:
- Write the word “recalled” on the smoke alarm using a permanent marker.
- Take a photo of the marked alarm and submit it, along with your contact information, to the recall website provided by the company.
- Once submitted, a replacement unit will be shipped, though a shipping fee may apply.
The company is also reaching out directly to known purchasers to ensure awareness of the recall.
Ensuring Home Safety
In a statement, Samurai emphasized their commitment to consumer safety and urged all customers with affected products to act immediately. “Your safety and that of your family is our priority,” the company said, encouraging prompt participation in the recall process.
