Households across the UK are set to benefit from a £150 discount on their energy bills this winter through the Warm Home Discount scheme. This initiative, managed by the Department for Energy and Net Zero under the Labour Party government, provides financial relief to eligible households during the colder months.
The discount is applied automatically for those who qualify, spanning from October to March. However, participation is limited to certain energy suppliers. If your supplier is not on the approved list, you will not receive the benefit.

Eligibility Criteria for the Warm Home Discount Scheme
In addition, the scheme is designed to help households on low incomes or in receipt of specific benefits, with eligibility divided into two main categories. For example, Core Group One (England and Wales) or Core Group (Scotland) includes households where the account holder or their partner is in receipt of the Guarantee Credit element of Pension Credit.
For households on low incomes, receiving certain benefits and facing high energy costs, Core Group Two (England and Wales) applies. However, in Scotland, eligible households must contact their energy supplier directly to apply if they are not automatically registered.
Benefits That Qualify for the Warm Home Discount
The following benefits may qualify a household for the discount:
- Housing Benefit
- Income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA)
- Income Support
- The “Savings Credit” portion of Pension Credit
- Universal Credit
Households with incomes below a certain threshold may also qualify if they receive:
- Child Tax Credit
- Working Tax Credit
How Households Access the Warm Home Discount
In England and Wales, eligible households in Core Group One are automatically identified and enrolled. For Core Group Two or those in Scotland, contacting your energy supplier is essential to confirm participation and secure the discount.
The Warm Home Discount aims to alleviate energy costs during the winter, providing critical support for those in need. Ensure your energy supplier participates in the scheme and check your benefit eligibility to take advantage of this program.
