The well-known grocery chain Winn-Dixie is undergoing a significant restructuring, resulting in the closure or sale of over 30 of its locations across the United States. This shift comes after the company’s parent, Southeastern Grocers, experienced a major ownership change, which included the full acquisition of the chain by Aldi in 2024.

Following this acquisition, Southeastern Grocers repurchased a portion of its stores earlier this year. The restructuring is part of a broader effort to focus on select markets, particularly Florida, and to streamline operations in other regions, marking a new phase for the historic grocery chain.

The Rebranding and Ownership Shift

The landscape of grocery stores in the Southeast is rapidly changing. Winn-Dixie, a grocery staple for many families, will undergo a significant transformation in the coming months. In early 2026, Southeastern Grocers plans to operate under the new brand name, “The Winn-Dixie Company,” with a concentrated effort on expanding in Florida.

This decision follows a series of strategic shifts, including the repurchase of several stores that were previously sold to Aldi.

In a press release, CEO Anthony Hucker noted that for nearly a century, Winn-Dixie has proudly called Florida home. With this new chapter, the grocery chain aims to grow where its roots run deepest, particularly in the Sunshine State. This means that while many stores in states like Alabama, Georgia, and Louisiana will be sold off or shut down, Winn-Dixie’s focus will be narrowed to areas that can best support its long-term growth strategy.

This reorganization also stems from Aldi’s acquisition of Southeastern Grocers in August 2023. After the deal closed in March 2024, a group of private investors led by the Southeastern Grocers CEO and C&S Wholesale Grocers repurchased roughly 170 of the Winn-Dixie and Harveys Supermarket stores from Aldi in February 2025.

This move marked a significant shift in ownership, and Southeastern Grocers is now focused on restructuring its operations to better serve the regions where it has a strong historical presence.

The Affected Stores: A Complete List of Closures

A major part of Southeastern Grocers’ restructuring plan involves selling or closing over 30 stores in various states. This move is a response to both market demands and the company’s desire to fine-tune its operations. In total, 32 Winn-Dixie stores and 8 Harveys Supermarkets will be sold, with many being transferred to competitors like Food City and Piggly Wiggly.

Some stores are expected to undergo significant changes, including rebranding and remodels. This significant realignment of locations will impact shoppers across Alabama, Louisiana, and Mississippi.

For customers in these states, the loss of local stores is disappointing, but the good news is that Southeastern Grocers will be focusing its efforts on expanding in Florida, where it plans to convert several Hitchcock’s Markets into new Winn-Dixie locations.

Specifically, stores in Alachua, Keystone Heights, and Williston will soon be converted into Winn-Dixie stores, starting with a new opening in Williston in December 2025. These new openings align with the company’s Florida-centric strategy, designed to cater to the needs of local communities.

As reported by The US Sun, Southeastern Grocers is also expanding its liquor store portfolio and testing new customer conveniences, including a partnership with Amazon to offer grocery deliveries in Jacksonville and Orlando, Florida. These efforts reflect the company’s desire to modernize its offerings and meet evolving consumer demands.
