The crackdown on illegal streaming in the UK has reached a boiling point, with multiple homes raided across the country over the use of illicit Amazon Fire TV sticks. What seems like a simple streaming hack could cost you thousands – and possibly even jail time.
The Shocking Fire TV Stick Raids – Where Were They?
In a massive joint operation led by the police and the Federation Against Copyright Theft (FACT), homes in cities like London, Cheshire, Kent, Sussex, Norfolk, Northamptonshire, Lincolnshire, Derbyshire, Staffordshire, the East and West Midlands, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Northumbria, and North Yorkshire were targeted.
The raids began in November 2024 after reports emerged that illegal streaming of sports and television had become widespread, thanks to the use of jailbroken Fire TV sticks. More than 30 suppliers of these devices have now been identified, and authorities are taking strict actions to disrupt their operations.
Who’s Getting Arrested and Why?
One of the most notable arrests was made in Newport, where a 42-year-old man was taken into custody on suspicion of selling illicit Fire TV sticks. Several others were contacted by FACT and received cease-and-desist letters, a first step in holding offenders accountable. Jonathan Edge, a 29-year-old from Liverpool, was sentenced to three years in prison for selling and using these illegal devices.
Despite receiving cease-and-desist notices from FACT, Edge continued with his illegal activities, leading to the Premier League taking him to court. As Kieron Sharp, the CEO of FACT, warned: “Our cease-and-desist measures are not just warnings—they are the first step toward holding offenders accountable.”
