Ford is recalling nearly 274,000 SUVs in the United States due to a manufacturing defect that could cause brake fluid leaks and lead to a loss of braking function while driving, significantly increasing the risk of a crash in affected vehicles.

The recall applies to both the Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator models produced between 2022 and 2024. According to information reported by NPR, the issue originates from a possible installation flaw that may cause brake lines to rub against engine components. Federal safety authorities are overseeing the campaign, and Ford has begun notifying dealers.

Brake Line Contact May Cause Leakage and Brake Failure

According to documents from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the front brake lines in certain vehicles “may be in contact” with the engine air cleaner outlet pipe due to a possible installation defect. This could lead to a brake fluid leak and, in some cases, loss of brake function while driving.

The affected models include 223,315 Ford Expeditions and 50,474 Lincoln Navigators, covering model years 2022 to 2024. In a recall report dated Friday, Ford said it estimates that only 1% of these vehicles have the defect.

Impacted drivers might experience an increase in brake pedal travel, requiring them to press harder to apply the brakes. In vehicles with a leaking brake line, the fluid level may gradually drop, potentially causing the red brake warning indicator to illuminate.

While the defect poses a safety risk, Ford is not aware of any accidents or injuries related to the issue. As of April 17, the company had received 45 warranty reports involving front brake line leaks.

Free Inspections and Repairs Planned for Late May

As a remedy, Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the front brake lines in affected vehicles and replace either the lines or the engine air cleaner outlet pipe, if needed. All repairs will be performed at no cost to vehicle owners.

Dealers were scheduled to begin receiving notifications on Wednesday, with owner letters to be mailed between May 26 and May 30.

Owners can verify if their SUV is part of the recall using the NHTSA’s recall lookup tool or Ford’s official recall search. The company has assigned the internal reference number 25S47 to this campaign.

A spokesperson for Ford declined to provide additional comment when contacted by The Associated Press on Wednesday.

This recall highlights the continued importance of vehicle safety monitoring and timely manufacturing oversight. Federal authorities and automakers remain engaged in identifying potential risks and mitigating hazards before they lead to serious consequences on the road.
