The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced recalls of tomatoes sold across 14 states due to potential contamination with Salmonella, a serious bacterial pathogen.

Two wholesaler companies, Ray & Mascari Inc. and Williams Farms Repack LLC, have issued separate recalls as a precautionary measure following notifications from their suppliers.

The recalls highlight ongoing concerns about food safety and the risk of Salmonella infections, which can lead to severe illness, especially among vulnerable populations. Consumers in affected states are urged to discard any recalled tomatoes and avoid consumption to prevent potential health risks.

Details of the Tomato Recalls and Affected Regions

According to the FDA, Ray & Mascari Inc., based in Indianapolis, Indiana, is recalling “4 Count Vine Ripe Tomatoes” packaged in clam shell containers. These tomatoes were distributed to Gordon Food Service Stores across Illinois, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, Missouri, Mississippi, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, and Wisconsin.

The recall was initiated after the company was notified by Hanshaw & Capling Farms of Immokalee, Florida, that tomatoes supplied to them may be contaminated with Salmonella. Separately, Williams Farms Repack LLC issued a recall for tomatoes sold in South Carolina, Georgia, and North Carolina.

The company was alerted on 29 April 2025 by Southeast Tomato Distributors about a potential contamination linked to tomatoes supplied from H&C Farms. These tomatoes were distributed between 23 and 28 April 2025, and no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with either recall.

Health Risks and Guidance for Consumers

Salmonella is a bacterial organism known to cause infections in the intestinal tract, which can result in symptoms ranging from mild gastrointestinal discomfort to severe, sometimes fatal, complications in young children, the elderly, and those with weakened immune systems, according to information provided by the Mayo Clinic and the FDA.

The companies have notified customers and distribution centres with recall instructions. Consumers who have purchased the recalled tomatoes are strongly advised not to consume them and to dispose of the products safely.

Ray & Mascari Inc. has made available a contact number for any inquiries or to report illness: 1-317-637-0234, available Monday through Saturday, 6am to 5pm EST.

At present, no confirmed illnesses have been linked to the recalled products, but the FDA continues to monitor the situation closely to protect public health.
