The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a Class I recall for Rachel’s Ginger Beer (RGB Soda) following concerns about potential salmonella contamination in one of its products. This recall, linked to a nationwide cucumber recall, has prompted widespread attention due to the severity of the health risks involved.
In November 2024, RGB Soda voluntarily recalled its Cucumber x Tarragon Ginger Beer due to potential risks stemming from cucumbers used in the product.
Although the company stated that contamination was unlikely, the precautionary measures taken included destroying all affected batches. Recently, however, the FDA has elevated the warning to its highest risk classification, signalling significant concern over public health.
The Health Risks of Salmonella Contamination
Salmonella is a potentially deadly bacteria that can cause serious gastrointestinal illness, particularly in vulnerable populations such as children, the elderly, and those with compromised immune systems.
According to the FDA, the product’s recall carries a Class I classification, which implies “a reasonable probability that the use of or exposure to a violative product will cause serious adverse health consequences or death.”
Symptoms of a salmonella infection typically include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, and can appear anywhere from 12 to 72 hours after exposure. In severe cases, the infection can lead to hospitalization, and rarely, it can spread to other parts of the body, potentially causing life-threatening conditions.
While most people recover without antibiotics, some cases are more severe and require medical intervention. Experts from the University of New Hampshire have highlighted various routes of contamination, including improper irrigation or cross-contamination during the production process.
Details of the Affected Product and Recall Process
The affected product is the Refrigerated Cucumber x Tarragon Ginger Beer, which comes in 32oz and 64oz containers, as well as 5-gallon pony kegs. These drinks were sold exclusively at RGB Soda’s own stores in Washington state, with expiry dates ranging from December 2024 to January 2025.
According to the company, the cucumber used in the ginger beer was linked to a broader cucumber recall last year, although the current recall does not involve the same supplier.
Consumers who purchased these products are advised to check with the store of purchase. The FDA has recommended that individuals who suspect they may have consumed the recalled product seek medical advice, especially if symptoms consistent with salmonella infection develop.
