The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has announced a recall of Atlantic Salmon Portions with Seafood Stuffing sold at Aldi stores in three states. The recall was initiated by Santa Monica Seafood after the discovery of an undeclared soy allergen in the product, posing a risk to consumers with soy allergies.
This voluntary recall highlights the ongoing importance of accurate food labelling to protect those with allergies and sensitivities. Soy is classified as a major allergen by the FDA and must be clearly declared on packaging to prevent potentially serious allergic reactions.
Details of the Recalled Product and Distribution Areas
According to the FDA, the recalled salmon portions were produced by Santa Monica Seafood of Rancho Dominguez, California, and distributed exclusively through Aldi stores in California, Nevada, and Arizona. The affected product is labelled as “Fresh Never Frozen Stuffed Salmon,” with a net weight of 16 ounces.
The packaging features a use/freeze by date of June 2, 2025, and includes a product date code on the white portion of the front label beneath the product image. The recall was triggered after the supplier identified the undeclared soy allergen during a routine label inspection.
The FDA emphasises that no illnesses have been reported so far in connection with consumption of the product. However, consumers who have purchased the affected salmon are advised to check the packaging carefully and return it to Aldi for a full refund.
Consumer Advice and Regulatory Implications
The FDA underscores the seriousness of undeclared allergens in food products. Soy is one of the eight major food allergens regulated by the agency, and failure to disclose it on packaging can lead to severe, life-threatening reactions in sensitive individuals.
Consumers with soy allergies or sensitivities should avoid the recalled salmon portions and monitor for any adverse symptoms if they have consumed the product. Aldi has reportedly removed the product from store shelves, but customers may still have the salmon at home.
Santa Monica Seafood has provided a customer helpline for inquiries, operating Monday to Friday, from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Pacific Time. The FDA also directs consumers to its food allergies information page for further guidance on managing allergies.
This recall serves as a reminder of the critical role of food labelling compliance in safeguarding public health. Regular inspections and prompt voluntary recalls help prevent potential allergic reactions and maintain consumer confidence in food safety.
