The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has issued a recall for several pet food products due to potential salmonella contamination. The recall involves items from brands such as Foodynamics and Raw Bistro Pet Fare, which were distributed across multiple states including Wisconsin, New York, and Florida.
These products may pose a health risk to pets and humans alike. Pet owners are advised to immediately stop using the affected items and return them for a refund. The FDA’s testing led to this precautionary measure, though no illnesses have been reported at this time.
Salmonella Contamination in Pet Food
Salmonella poses a significant health risk not only to pets but also to humans. If pets consume contaminated food, they may develop symptoms like lethargy, diarrhea (sometimes bloody), vomiting, fever, and abdominal pain. In some cases, pets may exhibit no symptoms at all but can still be carriers of the bacteria, potentially transmitting the infection to other animals or even humans.
It is important to monitor your pets for signs of illness if they have consumed any recalled products. If your pet displays symptoms, the FDA strongly recommends contacting your veterinarian. Additionally, since salmonella can spread through direct contact with contaminated pet food or surfaces, pet owners should be diligent about sanitizing their pets’ food bowls, scoops, utensils, and storage containers, as reported by SI Live.

Several brands have been impacted by this salmonella recall. Below are the key details for the recalled items:

Raw Bistro Pet Fare Products Recalled
Raw Bistro Pet Fare, known for its raw dog food, also has several affected products:
- Raw Bistro Dog Fare Grass-Fed Beef Entrée: Sold in 3 lb bags (UPC 858833002247) and 18 lb bulk cases (UPC 858833002629). The affected lot number is 239, with a Best By date of 08/27/2026. These products were distributed between September 1-17 to consumers and selected distributors in California, Colorado, Illinois, and Minnesota.
While no illnesses in pets or humans have been reported so far, the FDA’s sample testing prompted the recall.
The Risks of Salmonella for Humans
Salmonella contamination doesn’t only affect pets—it also poses risks to humans, especially those who handle contaminated pet food. Infected individuals may experience symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea (which may be bloody), abdominal cramps, and fever. Although the risk to humans is relatively low, the FDA warns that in rare cases, a salmonella infection can lead to more serious conditions like arthritis, endocarditis, and urinary tract infections.
To protect yourself, it’s important to thoroughly wash your hands after handling pet food or anything that has come into contact with it. Additionally, clean and disinfect any surfaces or objects that may have been exposed to the recalled pet food. If you experience symptoms after handling the products, seek medical advice immediately.
As the FDA explains, it’s also crucial to follow proper food handling guidelines to prevent the spread of infection. If you own any of the recalled products, do not feed them to your pets or other animals. Return them to the point of purchase for a refund.
