Concerns over food safety have resurfaced following a major product recall involving a well-known organic snack brand. The action stems from potential contamination issues detected in millions of snack bars distributed across multiple markets.

While the manufacturer has taken swift voluntary measures, the situation has drawn the attention of US regulatory authorities, prompting a formal classification of the health risk. The development raises broader questions about manufacturing oversight and consumer protection in the growing health-food sector.

FDA Updates Recall Risk for Organic Snack Brand

A voluntary recall of more than 2.4 million cases of MadeGood granola bars has been formally classified as a Class II recall by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), following concerns over possible contamination with metal fragments.

The issue involves brush bristles believed to have been unintentionally introduced during the manufacturing process, according to the company’s statement.

The recall, initially issued in December 2024, covers a wide selection of the brand’s products, including popular flavours like Chocolate Chip, Mixed Berry, and Cookies & Crème

These items were produced between January and November 2024 and sold in Canada, the United States, and other international markets. Although no injuries have been reported, Riverside Natural Foods Inc., the parent company of MadeGood, stated that the measure was taken “out of an abundance of caution” in collaboration with regulatory bodies.

Classification and Scope of the Recall

The FDA’s Class II designation means the recalled products may cause “temporary or medically reversible adverse health consequences,” but the probability of serious harm remains low. This sits between Class I, the most severe level of recall, and Class III, which suggests minimal risk.

According to the FDA, the classification was based on the possibility that the products “may contain metal pieces” capable of posing short-term health risks if consumed.

The company disclosed it received seven complaints that triggered the investigation, although no consumers reported injury or illness.

MadeGood confirmed that the manufacturing fault was the result of an “isolated issue” and said the source had been identified and corrected. Affected products were promptly removed from store shelves in coordination with retail partners.

The full list of recalled products includes:

  • Chocolate Chip Granola Bars
  • Mixed Berry Granola Bars
  • Strawberry Granola Bars
  • Cookies & Crème Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Banana Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Birthday Cake Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Cookie Crumble Granola Bars
  • Chocolate Drizzled Vanilla Granola Bars

Consumers are advised to check their packaging and return any listed products to the original point of purchase for a full refund. For further assistance, MadeGood has set up a dedicated hotline and information page on its website.

The company reiterated its commitment to product safety and confirmed that the recall had been issued with the full knowledge of food safety authorities.
