Coca-Cola has issued a recall for select bottles of Topo Chico Mineral Water following concerns over contamination with Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a bacterium that poses a health risk to individuals with weakened immune systems. The recall has been expanded to multiple states and retailers, including Costco.

The recall, first announced on June 2, 2025, highlights Coca-Cola’s commitment to safety, but also raises concerns regarding the potential risks of contaminated bottled water.

While the risk to the general public is considered minimal, those with compromised immune systems—such as hospital patients and the elderly—are advised to avoid consuming the affected products.

The Contamination Risk: Understanding Pseudomonas aeruginosa

The specific bacterium identified in the affected bottles is Pseudomonas aeruginosa, a pathogen typically found in water sources, including natural mineral waters.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the bacteria are common in healthcare environments and are capable of causing serious infections in people with weakened immune systems.

This may include infections in the blood, lungs, urinary tract, or other body parts, particularly in those recovering from surgery or using medical devices.

While the recall only affects a limited number of bottles, Coca-Cola has acknowledged that the contamination could pose a risk to vulnerable populations. The company’s statement mentioned that the bottles in question were sold primarily at Costco warehouses across Louisiana and Texas, with other retailers affected in Arizona, Nevada, and New Mexico.

No illnesses have been reported to date, but the recall serves as a precautionary measure aimed at protecting public health.

The Scope of the Recall and What Consumers Should Do

The recall pertains specifically to Topo Chico Mineral Water in 16.9-ounce (500mL) glass bottles. These bottles were sold in 18-packs and are marked with the lot code #13A2541, with a purchase date of May 20 and May 29, 2025. The affected bottles can be identified by their lot codes, which appear on both the case sides and the necks of the bottles.

Coca-Cola has ensured that all affected products have been removed from shelves across the impacted retail locations. Consumers who purchased the affected product are encouraged to return it to the store for a full refund. The company’s customer service line, 1-800-GET-COKE (1-800-438-2653), is available for further inquiries.

As the situation develops, Coca-Cola has stated that customer safety remains a top priority, and steps are being taken to prevent similar incidents in the future.
