Next week, a grant of €1,850 will be distributed to those eligible. Find out more about eligibility criteria and the payment procedure to determine whether you are entitled to this financial assistance.

The Carer's Support Grant amounts will be paid on 6 June. It is not subject to tax and can be used at your discretion.

Applications for the grant can be made for any year from April of the current year to 31 December of the following year. For instance, applications for Carer's Allowance 2024 can be made from April 2024 until 31 December 2025.

Eligibility for the Upcoming €1,850 Carer's Support Grant

The Department of Social Protection will make the payment automatically on Thursday 6 June. Here are the eligibility criteria for the Carer's Allowance:

Automatic Qualification

The Carer’s Support Grant is automatically paid to those receiving:

  • Full-rate or half-rate Carer’s Allowance
  • Carer’s Benefit
  • Domiciliary Care Allowance

If you are not getting one of the above benefits, you can still claim Carer's Allowance if you meet the following criteria:

  • Age: You must be aged 16 or over.
  • Residence: You must be ordinarily resident in Ireland.
  • Full-time care: You must be a full-time carer.
  • Duration of care: You must have been caring for the person for at least six months, including the first Thursday in June.
  • Living arrangements: You must live with the person you are caring for or, if not, meet certain conditions (for example, you must be able to be contacted quickly and directly by the person).

Restrictions During the Care Period

During the 6-month care period, you may not :

  • Work more than 18.5 hours per week, whether as an employee or self-employed.
  • Participate in an education or training course for more than 18.5 hours per week.
  • Receive Jobseeker's Allowance or Jobseeker's Benefit.
  • Sign on for credited contributions.
  • Reside in a hospital, convalescent home, or similar institution.

No Means Test Required

Carer's Allowance is not means-tested. In addition, if you are caring for more than one person, you will receive an allowance for each of them.

Also, if you are caring for a baby who remains in hospital or a similar institution for medical treatment after birth, you may qualify for Carer's Grant, provided the baby has a disability which qualifies for Home Care Allowance.
