Over two million British households have been warned they may be missing out on council tax benefits worth more than £1,500 each year.

Many People Could be Missing out on Council Support

Some homes' council tax rates have climbed by 10% since the beginning of April, while the national average payment has increased by £106 per year.

According to a research, nearly 2.3 million people are failing to collect a staggering £3.4 billion in council tax help.

According to Policy in Practice's examination of official data, this equates to an average annual support of £1,513.

Council tax relief is available to help low-income residents pay their bills.

Those who are eligible could receive a discount of up to 100% through the help.

Pensioners are among those who are missing out on this additional support. According to figures, about £1 million in pension-age council tax help remains unclaimed.

Pensioners who receive the promised portion of Pension Credit may have their council tax fully covered.

Many consumers miss out on these savings because they are unaware they exist or that they are eligible.

Who Can Apply for the Unclaimed Council Tax?

You are eligible to apply for unclaimed council tax support if you own your house, rent, are unemployed, or work.

What you receive depends on:

  • Where you live—each council runs its own plan.
  • Your situation (for example, income, number of children, benefits, residency status)
  • Your household income, including savings, pensions, and the income of your partner
  • If you have children or other individuals living with you.

How do I Claim Council Tax Support?

The first thing you need to do to make a claim is contact your local council. All local councils use the same Council Tax Reduction scheme for people over State Pension, but the scheme for people below State Pension age can vary between councils.

Contact your local council to find out which scheme they use. Find your local council and start your claim on GOV.UK.
