Breyers Ice Cream Recall: FDA Warns of Life-Threatening Allergen Mix-Up

Breyers Ice Cream faces a major recall due to an undeclared life-threatening allergen. The recall stems from a labeling error where tubs marked as “Chocolate Truffle” actually contain Rocky Road ice cream, which includes almonds. The FDA has classified it as a Class II recall, warning of potential health risks for consumers with nut allergies.

In early June 2025, Unilever announced a recall of Breyers ice cream after a significant packaging error left tubs marked as Chocolate Truffle containing Rocky Road ice cream instead. The error posed a health risk for those with nut allergies due to undeclared allergens.

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has classified the recall as Class II, meaning consumption could cause temporary or medically reversible health consequences.

The nature of the recall

Unilever’s recall affects 6,668 cases of Breyers ice cream, specifically the Chocolate Truffle tubs that were inadvertently filled with Rocky Road ice cream. The affected tubs, which were distributed across the U.S., are identified by a lot code of JUL1026GB3 and a UPC code of 077567457288.

The mix-up occurred due to a packaging issue, where a Chocolate Truffle tub was sealed with a Rocky Road lid. This led to a significant allergen risk, as the Rocky Road ice cream contains almonds, a known allergen.

According to the FDA, the issue was identified during routine checks and prompted the recall as a precautionary measure. Rocky Road ice cream contains tree nuts, unlike the Chocolate Truffle ice cream, which does not include nuts as part of its ingredients.

The potential for severe allergic reactions has raised concerns about consumer safety, particularly among those with nut allergies.

What consumers need to know

For those who may have purchased the affected tubs, Unilever has advised that Breyers Rocky Road Ice Cream should not be consumed if you have a nut allergy or sensitivity. The packaging error is unlikely to affect anyone without a nut allergy, but the company has recommended returning the product for a full refund or replacement.

This recall serves as a reminder of the importance of accurate allergen labelling in the food industry, especially when dealing with life-threatening conditions such as severe nut allergies.

If consumers find a tub of Breyers Chocolate Truffle ice cream in their freezer that contains Rocky Road, they are urged to dispose of it immediately. Alternatively, they can return it to the point of purchase for a replacement or refund.
