A strange email, an odd phone call, or a message that clearly didn’t add up. Those days are fading quickly. Today’s scams are far more convincing — and Australians are paying the price.

Scam Losses Still Running Into The Billions

New figures from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) show Australians lost $2.18 billion to scams in 2025. While the number is lower than the record-breaking losses seen in 2022, it remains an enormous amount of money disappearing into criminal networks.

Behind that figure are thousands of individual stories. Victims include retirees, small business owners and everyday people who believed they were making legitimate financial decisions. For many, the losses represent savings accumulated over years — sometimes decades.

Authorities say scam reports continue to arrive in large numbers. The challenge is not just the volume of scams, but the growing sophistication behind them.

Scammers rip off Australians to the tune of $2 billion, ACCC figures show https://t.co/LgBABVC3Sw via @ABCaustralia
— Alain Charret (@renseignor) March 30, 2026

Investment Scams Lead The Losses

Among all scam categories, investment scams accounted for the biggest financial damage, with Australians losing around $837.7 million last year. These scams typically involve fake trading platforms or fraudulent investment opportunities promising unusually high returns.

Payment redirection scams were the second-largest category, costing Australians $166.8 million. In these cases, scammers trick businesses or individuals into transferring money to fraudulent bank accounts after impersonating trusted contacts.

Other major scams included romance scams ($139.9 million) and phishing scams ($97.6 million). Remote access scams — where criminals convince victims to grant access to their computers or phones — also contributed significantly to total losses.

Together, the five largest scam types accounted for around 60 per cent of all money lost.

Scammers Becoming More Sophisticated

Regulators say scams are becoming increasingly difficult to detect. According to ACCC deputy chair Catriona Lowe, criminal groups are using more advanced tools and operating with a level of organisation that resembles professional businesses.

Artificial intelligence is beginning to play a major role in these schemes. Scammers can now generate fake voices, fabricated video calls and highly convincing online identities designed to build trust with victims.

Some scams now unfold over weeks or months, gradually convincing targets to invest money or transfer funds. In many cases, victims only realise they have been scammed when the money is already gone.

As technology evolves, the gap between genuine communication and fraudulent messages continues to shrink.

New Scam Laws Still Not Fully In Place

The federal government has introduced legislation designed to strengthen protections against scams. The new Scam Prevention Framework aims to hold banks, telecommunications companies and digital platforms more accountable for preventing fraud.

Under the reforms, companies could face penalties of up to $50 million if they fail to stop scams occurring through their systems. Banks would also be required to verify payment details more carefully before transferring funds.

However, the framework has not yet been fully implemented. Mandatory industry codes and enforcement mechanisms are still being developed. Consumer advocates argue the delay is leaving Australians exposed to increasingly sophisticated scams.

Real Victims Continue To Pay The Price

One Sydney retiree recently discovered just how devastating scams can be. Criminals impersonated him in emails sent to his stockbroker, convincing staff to sell his entire share portfolio and transfer the funds to a different bank account.

The loss totalled $50,000, and although part of the money was recovered, he remains significantly out of pocket after legal expenses. The experience has also left him deeply frustrated.

Cases like this illustrate a harsh reality behind the statistics. Scam figures may be reported in billions of dollars, but each loss represents a real person facing stress, uncertainty and financial damage.

For regulators, the challenge now is clear: scams are evolving rapidly, and Australia’s protections must evolve just as quickly.

Australians lost more than $2 billion to scams last year as fraud becomes more sophisticated and harder for consumers to detect.

[44

post-110010","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-news","generate-columns","tablet-grid-50","mobile-grid-100","grid-parent","grid-33","no-featured-image-padding
["GET
