Australia’s dependence on foreign fuel is a real problem. For years, we’ve been reliant on importing oil to fuel our cars, trucks, and buses—subject to the whims of global oil prices. But what if there was a way to break free from that cycle? Enter electric vehicles (EVs), which are slowly becoming the key to reducing Australia’s reliance on foreign fuel, potentially saving billions of litres of petrol every year. But how feasible is this, and what role do EVs play in the bigger picture of energy security?

EVs: A Potential Game-Changer for Australia

If 1 million petrol cars were replaced by EVs, Australia could cut its fuel consumption by more than 1 billion litres per year, according to experts. The idea is simple—shift from fuel-based energy to electricity, most of which is produced locally. This means less reliance on oil imports, and more energy use that’s sourced domestically, reducing Australia’s vulnerability to global oil price shocks.

Professor Hussein Dia, a transport technology and sustainability expert, points out to The Guardian that by moving to electric vehicles, Australia could make its transport sector more resilient to the fluctuations that come with global conflicts, like the recent turmoil in the Middle East. While petrol prices fluctuate and become unpredictable due to geopolitical issues, electricity prices are more stable and largely unaffected by foreign crises.
