Hundreds of millions in Medicare refunds are just sitting there, untouched. No fine print, no legal hurdle — just money waiting for someone to notice. And for nearly a million Australians, all it takes is logging in.

$270 Million in Medicare Rebates Left Unclaimed

According to Services Australia, more than $270 million in unpaid Medicare benefits is currently owed to around 960,000 people. The reason is surprisingly mundane: their bank account details aren’t listed or up to date in their Medicare online account. This isn’t a glitch in the system. It’s more of a quiet gap — people go to the doctor, swipe their card, and assume the rebate takes care of itself. In many cases, it doesn’t.

“There are people in every age group and every part of the country owed money,” said to Yahoo Finance Hank Jongen, general manager at Services Australia. He points out the average amount owed is about $275 per person — not life-changing, but not pocket change either.

$570 million in Medicare benefits, cash waiting to be claimed by Aussies: ‘Simple check’ https://t.co/hxsKbELuUQ
— Yahoo Finance Australia (@YahooFinanceAU) January 6, 2026

Young Australians Missing Out the Most

The data shows that 18- to 24-year-olds are the group with the most unclaimed benefits. More than 250,000 of them are owed a collective $62.8 million. The reasons? Probably a mix of outdated info, mobile lifestyles, and simply not realising there’s money to be claimed.

But this isn’t a youth-only issue. Millions are owed across every state: New South Wales: 290,200 people owed $85.5 million. Victoria: 240,400 people owed $67.3 million. Queensland: 207,400 people owed $54.1 million. The amounts vary, but the story is the same: money that’s technically yours, just waiting to be asked for.

Beyond Medicare: Unclaimed Government Funds Pile Up

It’s not just Medicare. Across state governments, more money is piling up from uncashed cheques, refunds, overpayments, dividends, and more. In New South Wales alone, more than $300 million is being held by Revenue NSW, linked to over 800,000 payments that haven’t been collected.

NSW Finance Minister Courtney Houssos described it simply: “We want to make sure as much of that as possible finds its way back to families.” The largest amounts are sitting in Sydney’s eastern suburbs and western Sydney, followed by the Central Coast and Hunter regions.

One Quick Check Could Unlock It

So how do you know if some of that money is yours? It’s easy. Log in to your Medicare online account through myGov. If you’re owed money, there will be a notification on your home page. And if your bank details are missing or outdated, you can update them in just a few clicks.

There’s no paperwork, no need to call anyone, and no waiting in line. It’s one of those rare moments in public administration where something actually works… if you know where to look.

Forgotten Doesn’t Mean Lost

In a time when the cost of living continues to climb, ignoring a few hundred dollars isn’t ideal — yet that’s exactly what hundreds of thousands of Australians are doing, unknowingly. Whether it’s a missed refund or an unclaimed rebate, the money hasn’t gone far. It’s just waiting to come back — but only if someone remembers to collect it.

Hundreds of thousands of Australians have unclaimed Medicare money.
