It’s every parent’s nightmare: a toy that you thought was safe could potentially harm your child. That’s exactly what’s happening with some popular Bluey, Paw Patrol, and Frozen 2-themed sensory activity sets. These toys, which have been sold by Kmart, are being recalled due to asbestos concerns. So, what’s going on, and what should you do if you have one of these toys at home?

Toys with Hidden Dangers: The Asbestos Issue

Kmart’s recall involves sensory activity sets that include sealed tubs of coloured sand. This sand, which was part of the toys’ fun, has been found to potentially contain asbestos, a toxic mineral linked to serious health risks when inhaled. While Kmart’s statement clarified that the risk of inhaling dangerous asbestos fibres is low—unless the sand is crushed or pulverised—the fact that asbestos was found in the first place has raised alarms.

The retailer has been clear: if you have one of these sets, stop using it immediately. In fact, Kmart is advising customers to avoid opening the sand tubs and to place them in a sealed plastic bag. They’ve also directed parents to the ACCC’s product safety website for disposal instructions, emphasizing that the toys shouldn’t just be thrown away in household waste.
