By contrast, fuel is cheaper in countries such as Malaysia ($0.73), Vietnam ($1.27), and the US ($1.45).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These figures suggest that while fuel prices<\/a> in Australia feel high, they are moderate in international terms, particularly when compared to Europe.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Tax Levels: How Australia Compares<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The current fuel excise<\/strong> in Australia stands at 50.8 cents per litre<\/strong>, but Opposition Leader Peter Dutton<\/strong> has proposed reducing it to 25.4 cents<\/strong> for 12 months\u2014an idea expected to cost $6 billion<\/strong> and potentially save motorists about $14 a week<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hawkins and Vidyattama both pointed to Australia\u2019s urban sprawl<\/strong> and underdeveloped public transport systems<\/strong> as key reasons for this dependence\u2014especially outside major cities. This means Australians not only drive more but also tend to use larger, less fuel-efficient vehicles<\/strong>, increasing overall consumption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As a result, petrol accounts for about 3% of average household income, according to Vidyattama\u2019s estimates\u2014adding weight to the argument that, regardless of global prices, fuel costs remain a major household burden.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

“I was thinking that the number is inflated.”
