Western Australian households are set to receive a major financial boost to store their own solar energy, with WA Labor<\/strong> announcing rebates of up to $5,000<\/strong> for home battery storage\u2014or $7,500<\/strong> for those on the regional Horizon Power<\/strong> grid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If re-elected in March, the state government will roll out the $387 million Residential Battery Scheme<\/strong> starting in July, aiming to more than double<\/strong> the number of home batteries installed across the state.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Bold Move to Support Home Energy Independence<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Western Australia leading the nation in rooftop solar adoption<\/a><\/strong>, this new scheme is designed to address a growing challenge: storing excess solar power<\/strong> for use when the sun isn\u2019t shining. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The program will underwrite at least 200 megawatt hours (MWh) of small-scale battery storage<\/strong>, equivalent to the first stage of the Kwinana Big Battery<\/strong>, one of the state\u2019s largest grid-scale storage projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Premier Roger Cook<\/strong> announced the initiative at WA Labor\u2019s election campaign launch, emphasizing that affordable battery storage<\/strong> is key to making solar energy work better for households<\/strong> and the wider grid.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cThese WA-first schemes will help thousands of Western Australian households play their part in WA\u2019s clean energy transition \u2013 while saving up to $1,500 a year<\/strong> on their power bills,\u201d Cook stated.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Making Batteries More Accessible for Low-Income Households<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

In addition to direct rebates, the plan includes no-interest loans of up to $10,000<\/strong>, aimed at making battery storage more accessible for low and medium-income families. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Households will have up to 10 years<\/strong> to repay the loans, ensuring that financial barriers<\/strong> don\u2019t prevent families from benefiting from lower energy costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The loan program<\/strong> is means-tested and expected to help up to 20,000 households<\/strong> overcome the high upfront cost of battery installation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMany people want to store their own energy but simply can\u2019t afford the initial investment,\u201d Cook explained. \u201cThis program will change that.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Boost for Wa\u2019s Battery Manufacturing Industry<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The initiative isn\u2019t just about helping homeowners\u2014it\u2019s also designed to stimulate local manufacturing. WA Labor has committed $50 million<\/strong> to a Battery Manufacturing Program, offering direct grants and low-interest loans to businesses working on homegrown battery solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With Western Australia<\/strong> sitting on some of the world\u2019s richest lithium reserves, the state has a unique opportunity to develop a homegrown battery supply chain<\/strong>, reducing reliance on imports while creating local jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A Grid Under Pressure: Why Battery Storage Is Critical<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Western Australia\u2019s main electricity grid has seen record levels of rooftop solar penetration<\/strong>, with solar power accounting for 80.5% of generation<\/strong> at one point in November 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

With residents installing 200 MW of new solar capacity every year, the need for storage solutions is becoming urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
