WA Labor has committed <strong>$50 million<\/strong> to a Battery Manufacturing Program, offering direct grants and low-interest loans to businesses working on homegrown battery solutions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With <strong>Western Australia<\/strong> sitting on some of the world\u2019s richest lithium reserves, the state has a unique opportunity to develop a <strong>homegrown battery supply chain<\/strong>, reducing reliance on imports while creating local jobs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Grid Under Pressure: Why Battery Storage Is Critical<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Western Australia\u2019s main electricity grid has seen record levels of<strong> rooftop solar penetration<\/strong>, with solar power accounting for <strong>80.5% of generation<\/strong> at one point in November 2023. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With residents installing 200 MW of new solar capacity every year, the need for storage solutions is becoming urgent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Already, the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wa.gov.au\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">WA government<\/a><\/strong> and market operators have greenlit multiple<strong> large-scale battery projects<\/strong>, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Kwinana Big Battery (Stage 1):<\/strong> 100 MW \/ 200 MWh, completed in 2023<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Kwinana Big Battery (Stage 2):<\/strong> 200 MW \/ 800 MWh, currently under development<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Neoen\u2019s Collie Battery (Stage 1):<\/strong> 219 MW \/ 878 MWh, recently commissioned<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Adding home batteries into the mix would help ease pressure on the grid, allowing households to store and use their own solar power instead of exporting excess energy during the day when demand is low.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">A Game-Changer for Energy Bills and Sustainability<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>The Residential Battery Scheme marks a <strong>significant shift<\/strong> in how Western Australia approaches <strong>household energy independence<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By making battery storage more affordable, the initiative could cut electricity bills, ease grid congestion, and accelerate WA\u2019s clean energy transition.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Energy policy expert <strong>Saul Griffith<\/strong>, from Rewiring Australia, welcomed the announcement, calling it a major step toward empowering households.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe know people want to store energy at home, and this program helps make that happen,\u201d Griffith said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Western Australia is rolling out a massive rebate for home battery storage, with households set to save thousands.
