The measure applies broadly, but the White House has indicated that Australia&#8217;s <strong>trade surplus with the US<\/strong> could be a factor in determining an exemption.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/au\/nbn-overhaul-government-faster-internet\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"100281\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Prime Minister Albanese<\/a> spoke with President Trump following the announcement, confirming that an exemption for Australia was <strong>&#8220;under consideration.&#8221;<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;Tariffs are not warranted against Australia, particularly because we have a trade surplus with the United States,&#8221; <strong>Mr Dutton<\/strong> said in response. &#8220;I want there to be a very clear message to the Trump administration that we don&#8217;t believe that this tariff should be put in place.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Opposition Leader Blames Government for Diplomatic Tensions<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>While supporting Australia&#8217;s bid for an exemption, Mr <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/au\/peter-dutton-spending-cuts-remain-unclear\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"100946\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Peter Dutton<\/a><\/strong> placed the blame for any strain in the <strong>US-Australia relationship<\/strong> on the Albanese government. He argued that past comments from the Prime Minister and other senior Australian officials have complicated diplomatic efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>&#8220;You can&#8217;t just brush over the history of the judgements the Prime Minister has made,&#8221; Mr Dutton said. &#8220;He&#8217;s made shocking judgements. He talked about being scared of President Trump.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reference was to remarks made by Mr Albanese in <strong>2017<\/strong>, when he was <strong>shadow transport minister<\/strong>, stating that President Trump <strong>\u201cscares the shit out of me.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Foreign Minister <strong>Penny Wong<\/strong> and Australia&#8217;s <strong>Ambassador to the US, <a href=\"https:\/\/kevinrudd.com\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/kevinrudd.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Kevin Rudd<\/a><\/strong>, have also made past statements critical of President Trump. In <strong>2021<\/strong>, Ms Wong said President Trump was <strong>\u201cprepared to trash alliances and partnerships for personal political interest.\u201d<\/strong> Mr Rudd, in <strong>2022<\/strong>, called him a <strong>\u201ctraitor to the West\u201d<\/strong> and <strong>\u201ca problem for the world.\u201d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Mr Peter Dutton suggested that such comments could influence the Trump administration\u2019s decisions regarding Australia and the US Tariff. <strong>&#8220;<\/strong> <em>The president will have noticed those comments. I think it&#8217;s difficult when that&#8217;s the starting point in the relationship,<\/em><strong>&#8220;<\/strong> he said.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Trade and Alliance at Stake<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond the <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/en.econostrum.info\/au\/tariffs-us-president-shake-markets-australia\/\" target=\"_blank\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"100970\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">economic impact of tariffs<\/a><\/strong>, Mr Dutton emphasised that the issue could affect broader ties between the US and Australia, including their <strong>security alliance<\/strong>.
