New South Wales is in for a dramatic shift in weather this week, as a cool change brings relief from recent high temperatures. The Bureau of Meteorology (BOM) forecasts a significant drop in temperatures and widespread rain across the state starting Monday evening.
Cooler Winds and Widespread Rainfall
The cool change is set to be driven by a cold front and a trough moving from the south, delivering a “burst of fresh southerly winds.” These winds are expected to bring cooler conditions to Sydney and surrounding regions, marking the end of the recent hot spell.
Senior meteorologist Hugh McDowell explained, “Ahead of the front, we have a lot of hot air and developing thunderstorms. This system will push across the Central Tablelands, Illawarra, Sydney, and the Blue Mountains, bringing cloud and rain as it moves northward.”
Rainfall estimates include 40-50 mm for the Illawarra, 30-35 mm for Sydney, and 20-30 mm for northern parts of the state. These rains will accompany cooler, cloudier conditions throughout Tuesday, making for a wet and stormy day.
Storms and Clearing Later in the Week
While rainfall totals are not expected to be overwhelming, the persistent wet weather will impact much of the state. North-eastern and central eastern NSW will see the heaviest rain, with thunderstorms continuing into Wednesday along the mid-north and north coasts.
Conditions are expected to improve starting Thursday. “From about Thursday onward, things will start drying off,” McDowell noted. “Rainfall totals will decrease, showers will become sporadic, and clouds will begin to break up.”
A Warm Weekend Ahead
Looking ahead to the weekend, weather conditions are set to improve significantly. Temperatures are expected to climb back into the high 20°C to low 30°C range, promising sunny skies and pleasant conditions for outdoor activities.
Residents across NSW can anticipate a brief but refreshing reprieve from summer heat this week, with wet and stormy weather clearing just in time for a warm and sunny weekend.
