From early December to February 1, public transport across Victoria will be free on weekends, as the state government rolls out an ambitious initiative to support local tourism and sustainability. The offer, which includes free access to trains, trams, and buses, aims to reduce transport costs and provide an easier way to explore the state’s diverse regions, just in time for summer.
The initiative marks a significant effort to enhance accessibility to Victoria’s natural and cultural attractions while addressing the environmental impacts of car travel. Premier Jacinta Allan described the move as the “biggest free transport bonanza” in the state’s history. The free travel period coincides with the opening of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, a major infrastructure project expected to improve commuting efficiency across the state.
A Boost for Regional Tourism
Victoria’s free public transport initiative is expected to have a positive impact on regional tourism. According to the Victorian Government, offering free travel will encourage both residents and tourists to explore areas outside Melbourne, with the potential to stimulate local economies. Cities like Warrnambool, Ballarat, and Geelong, which often receive fewer visitors than the capital, stand to benefit significantly.
Local leaders, including Warrnambool Mayor Ben Blain, have expressed excitement about the initiative, highlighting the potential to attract more tourists to regional attractions such as the Great Ocean Road and local cultural festivals. By removing the cost of transport, visitors can more easily visit smaller towns and hidden gems in regional Victoria, which are often overlooked by travellers heading straight to Melbourne.
Enhancing Commuting with the Metro Tunnel
The free transport initiative also ties in with the upcoming completion of the Melbourne Metro Tunnel, set to open in phases starting in December 2025. This $15.5 billion project promises to deliver faster, more frequent train services, which will significantly improve the commuting experience for both locals and tourists. According to Transport Minister Gabrielle Williams, the tunnel will cut congestion and make travelling around Melbourne quicker and more convenient.
With this new infrastructure, the state is aiming to provide more sustainable options for public transport. The Metro Tunnel will also support the growing demand for efficient travel during events such as the Australian Open and the Boxing Day Test Match, which fall during the free transport period. By linking key destinations, the tunnel and free transport programme offer an integrated and environmentally friendly solution for residents and tourists alike.
