Sydney drivers have a limited time to claim a substantial cash boost that could ease the financial strain of daily commuting. The NSW government is offering a $130 million pool for toll relief, with thousands of drivers eligible for refunds. The initiative has already delivered millions in rebates, and the clock is ticking for those hoping to benefit from it before the June 30 deadline.
The toll relief program is designed to help commuters who regularly exceed the $60 weekly cap on tolls. If you’re one of these drivers, you could be eligible for up to $340 per week back, but time is running out. With only a few days left, it’s essential for drivers to submit their claims before the window closes.
Toll Relief Program Offers Substantial Financial Support
The NSW government’s toll relief program has already provided significant financial relief to Sydney drivers. The program, introduced in 2023, caps tolls at $60 per week. If drivers spend more than this amount, they can claim a refund for the excess tolls, potentially receiving hundreds of dollars each week.
For example, if a driver spends $400 a month on tolls, they could be entitled to a refund of $340. The total amount available for claims between January 1, 2023, and March 31, 2024, is an estimated $130 million, which the government hopes will reach eligible drivers before the fiscal year ends.
“The positive difference this is making to people’s lives is something we, as a government, are proud of,” said Jihad Dib, Minister for Customer Service and Digital Government. This initiative has been especially helpful for those in suburban areas with long commutes, like Blacktown and Baulkham Hills.
How Drivers Can Claim Their Toll Refund
The toll relief rebate can be easily claimed through the Service NSW website. The process is straightforward, and claims can be submitted for each quarter of the year. Currently, claims for the first quarter, covering the period from January 1 to March 31, 2024, are open. The deadline for these claims is June 30, 2024.
In addition to the rebate for excess toll payments, drivers who spend more than $402 on tolls between July 1, 2023, and June 30, 2024, can apply for a 40% rebate. This initiative also has a June 30 deadline for claims.
The NSW government has emphasized that the process is simple and can be completed online, allowing drivers to easily access their refunds and avoid any unnecessary hassle.

The Program’s Impact on Sydney Suburbs
For many Sydney drivers, particularly those in the city’s western suburbs, long commutes have become a daily challenge. Suburbs like Blacktown, Baulkham Hills, and Auburn have already received millions of dollars in toll relief rebates, highlighting the program’s significant impact in areas that need it most.
Transport Minister John Graham praised the $60 cap, describing it as a vital cost-of-living support measure for Sydney residents. “It has been laser-like in getting to where it is needed most,” he noted, underscoring the program’s success in easing the financial burden on commuters in high-toll regions.
The June 30 deadline for the current claims process is fast approaching, and drivers must act quickly to ensure they don’t miss out. After this date, any unused toll claims from the first half of 2024 will no longer be eligible for refund. However, claims for the second quarter, covering the period from April 1 to June 30, 2024, will open on July 9 and remain open until the following year. The government also encourages drivers to stay informed about upcoming deadlines and continue using the Service NSW website for a seamless claims process.
